I would like to check are you direct call Maxis CS or already port out then Maxis call you?

QUOTE(zigzeghr @ Apr 13 2023, 04:31 PM)
Hi guys, need some advise on the speeds I'm getting as I recently upgrade to 300Mbps Fibre internet with Maxis Fibre. Wanted to switch to Celcom but Maxis gave me a nice discount to stay with them.

I'm very well-versed with computers however networking is an area where I'm very much lacking in knowledge.

Now my current equipment (provided by Maxis) is a Nokia G-240GE for the modem and a TP-Link Archer C5v for the router.

As an example from the speed tests I have done using Maxis Speed Test (from KL area to Subang Jaya), I'm getting around 222Mbps for Download and 54Mbps for upload using 5ghz wifi connection.

I'm generally ok with the speed (of course if there are ways to maximize it without needing to change equipment, preferably, pls advise) and I can check back with Maxis later.

However my big issue is with the pc in my work room. I'm using a TP-Link AV1300 Gigabit Passthrough Powerline Kit which is supposedly rated at 1,300Mbps for a cabled "ethernet" connection.

Connection is from the Archer router via ethernet cable to the TP-Link AV1300 which is then connected to a home electrical socket. Then another TP-Link AV1300, plugged into a socket near my work pc, connects to my work pc via ethernet cable to complete the connection.

The connection shown in my work PC is ethernet but connected via the 2.4ghz connection hence I'm only getting around 45-50Mbps download and around 35Mbps upload max.

Can anyone advise how can I change the connection to 5ghz or get close to the rated 300Mbps of my connection?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thank you everyone that took your time to reply to my question.

I'll look into purchasing 5ghz wifi adapter and/or wifi booster for my work room. Any recommended brands/models?

Btw, in order to maximize the speeds I'm getting, is it recommended that I changed both the modem/router? Again any recommended brands/models?

I suppose I don't really need a very expensive or high performance recommendations as it is only me & my gf living in the house.

And final questions for now, what would be a good average torrent download speed that I should be getting with a 300mbps connection?

Addendum: I just tried a different power socket and I got even worst performance. Down 22mbps / Up 22 mbps instead of the Down 55mbps / Up 50mbps when I switched back to the original socket. rclxub.gif

And below are my replies to the questions that I received.

how nice was the discount , I'm thinking to switch to celcom also after more than 10 years using maxis fiber

I was offered RM100.00 (excl. SST) for 12 months for the 300MB package. Originally I was on 30MB, then was given a free 1 year upgrade to 100MB so my 24-months contract is over.

I actually applied to CelcomDigi for port out. Maxis then called me and offered me the above deal to stay with them. Since I have had minimal connection issue with Maxis, I decided to take them up on their offer.

5ghz wifi adapter, if you are willing to do some diy installing, basically any wifi 6 pcie card on the market (except comfast), all use the Intel AX200 card, pretty decent
though the tplink c5v isnt wifi 6
odd that they didnt upgrade you to a wifi6 router
if you wanna replace hardware
modem (which is the nokia) you cant really replace
router (the tplink) you can replace, tplink ax series (ax10,20,23,50, etc) are fine, Asus is also alright
but do note you will lose the 4g backup and voip phone.
so maybe keep the c5v for now

wifi booster/repeater... not a great idea tbh

powerline peformance is unfortunately heavily reliant on cable quality

the 2.4ghz that showed up on the windows network connection is probably just the router reusing the wifi name for the ethernet network's name

Thanks for the reply.

Noted on the modem, I kind of remembered it but not 100% sure.

As for the router, reason Maxis didn't upgrade me to the wifi6 router is because it would require that I enter into another 24-months contract with them. Maxis said it wasn't necessary and I would prefer maintain my flexibility. Maxis also said (I can't recall 100%) that something will be announced around Aug/Sept this year...can't remember whether it will be by the government or telcos on new plans/rates.

And thank you for the recommendations. Will look into these models.

Any reason why these are not great idea? Some sort of performance bottleneck? Just like the powerline kit that I'm using where it's not a magical solution as claimed.

Well, wifi, the standard itself can only transmit or receive at 1 time, can't do both at the same time, so a repeater has to receive your data from your device, then transmit it to your router

Then it has to do the opposite when going back

Sure it happens within milliseconds so you don't feel much but it adds another hop that slows things down.

maxis rm129 for 300mbps.

even u port out to others telco. it also orignal price, unless u take along their postpaid plan min rm7x~1xx then u only get special discount on fiber price.

u may port out to unifi better. can get 6 month free bills.

Ah now I get what you mean but this would still be much better than me using my current setup if I want to take advantage of the extra speed for the desktop in my work room.

This is not correct tho. RM129 is for 100Mbps and it's RM 149 for 300Mbps.

I'm getting RM100/mth for a year for 300Mbps from Maxis...special offer to remain as customer.

And I'm not seeing any offer from Unifi for 6 months bill free. I'm only seeing Unifi offering 6 months free upgrade to a higher speed before defaulting back to the subscribed speed. Plus it'll be another 24 months of contract with unifi.

They give you good offer.

Today maxis call & offer upgrade router WiFi 6 without any payment but need renew contract.

I straight away say no need & informed other telco offer more cheap with faster speed. 😂😂😂

Depending on how far the pc is with the router, you can add on wifi5/wifi6 pcie adapter. However it is also recommended to change the router as well

The best way to utilise the subscription speed is still the ethernet cable, if your pc supports gigabit ethernet (if pc not very old)

If installation of ethernet isn't possible, or pc is too far away from router, then you can try to combine the wireless adapter with mesh wifi, but keep it in mind to invest into tri band mesh systems because of the way wifi works (dual band system in budget models can barely run over 150mbps in most situations when connected to secondary unit)

PCIE (RECOMMENDED): TPLINK TX3000E (WITH EXTERNAL ANTENNA), use together with any strong wifi6 router (ax3000 or ax5400 class)

USB (only consider this when pcie expension is not possible): TP LINK TX20U Plus
