the crazy flat land size in a lot of US states and tornadoes inseparable, no natural hill area as buffer to divert incoming tornado. Poverty around Mississippi,West Virginia and all around the Appalachian mountain started when a lot of coal mining industry there slowly gone. But at least they're not homeless compared to other rich state with big city setup, drug problem is crazy around this area including West Virginia.

Old industry died in their town, especially the coal mining industry around the Appalachian which shared with couple of states.
