Empty because they sold out very quickly. Even Bangla and Indon come and clean all their inventory. I would say nearly all their stuff is the cheapest compared to the rest. GT Mart is slightly more expensive but cleaner overall. They basically single handedly killed hypermarket industry.

My dad used to run a small sundry shop nearby the very 1st 99 in Klang. Still remember vividly they had grill at the door that you can ask at the front what you want to purchase to protect themselves from parang wielding robbers. Fast forward today, while my dad's shop has closed down since a long time, 99 became a national pride started by a guy on a wheel chair. It really show you don't need a tongkat to be successful.

inb4 someone will soon tell u how the 99 boss got his massive capital for aggressive expansion

I still find them to be the cheapest. Especially for the convenience factor. 3 outlets within 10mins walking distance from my place.

Open 99 many branches make ilusi like earning alot, bank will beg him to take loan, then buy the bank.
Later declare 99 bankrap loan no need pay.

I do see some innovations/differences in their biz model compared to old minimart style biz. number one is the stock turnover. they carry very limited but very high demand basic need items only. very different from your old style kedai runcit. no need to say their location always in high footfall traffic areas. basically they brought JIT inventory mgmt to minimart biz at scale to malaysia.

In this business, inventory management is the most important. Everyday empty shelf, not going to last long
