QUOTE(|Keantan| @ Oct 15 2007, 02:28 PM) Just to clarify (these things I know for certain pretty much); 1) Unlocking an iPhone is seen as a breach of the terms and conditions between AT&T, Apple and the consumer i.e. you. This is seen as illegal, as long as you use the phone it is seen that you have agreed to the terms and conditions. Breach of contract is not a crime. It is a civil matter. Apple cannot make laws. |

QUOTE(civic98 @ Oct 17 2007, 08:30 AM) i wonder if that law can be applied here, in malaysia. btw, i don't see any locked phone by any local telco, so i don't think there's any law on that. |

QUOTE(rajulkabir @ Oct 17 2007, 02:19 PM) It is true that apple cannot make laws. My explanation was rather a simplified version. I have considered getting an iPhone for myself as well, laws differ from country to country anyways, what may not be a crime here may be a crime in US.. *I haven't actually READ the terms and conditions set out by Apple for iPhone usage, this is based on general experience with other Apple products (as well as microsoft products), also how is it the case that I heard a Malaysian dude in Penang got a cease and desist call from AT&T (or Apple I'm not sure), when he unlocked his iPhone? I know for sure that once an iPhone has been tampered with, it is unelligible for warantee, unless the original state of the phone has been restored. That's what happened when I hacked my iPod. |

Which is the reason why local launch is doubtful. Sure, you can come back to me and say the French gets their iPhones unlocked, but fully unlocked (meaning even non-French telco sim cards works) or "unlocked to French telcos only"? And point #2, Apple can cater to the French market this way, since subscriber figures are significant, compared to Malaysian numbers. |

From cars to phone to iPhone... everything sure gets 'a mod' Its a pity. Let's not make the iPhone look like China made. |

Warranty void one you take it out of the country it was intended to be used, unless the unit has international warranty coverage.
Contrary to popular beliefs here, once you "virginise" your iPhone back to its locked state, Apple will honor warranty, provided you return it to the country it was purchased from. It is because the lot here knows little about virginising, or conclude that it's too difficult for them to do, that makes them assume to themselves that "warranty void still". |

Well upgrading is free cos it is managed by iTunes..... but all iPhone user in Malaysia or other than US or soon UK will only have ONE year warranty for hardware if you are an active user of AT&T or O2...
So to sum it... whether you unlock, hack, mod or what so ever... you use in Malaysia at your own risk... No Warranty from Apple... |

I don't think the shops are aware that Apple has changed their policy on iPhone... Warranty only on active AT&T account...

it's not a crime to do whatever you want to do with stuff that you bought. the only thing that's illegal is to publish the way to hack it. but, in some country, even that is not illegal.
