chinese are rich because their goal in life is to accumulate as much money and wealth as they could and always try to trample and tops everyone. money, wealth and to win in life what's motivate them. they're called kiasu for this reason. there are both upsides and downsides of this trait. upside is that it could lead to respect and success. downsides are these motivates them to go through any means to make money, even illegal ways. that's why large disproportionate numbers of scams, frauds, dvd piracy, gambling dens, prostitutions, drug trafficking, money laundering and gangsterism are headed by them.
My take on the motivational differences are more on the religious & socio-economic background. Most religion (even atheism) specified that wealth is never carried forward after death, and the deeds, sins or karma is purely intangible. For Chinese things like paper money, etc. needs to be paid for IRL, so wealthy life here = wealthy life there. On background viewpoint, the natives in Malay Archipelago has never (?) experienced great poverty the likes of post-Four Pest Campaign. Maybe we're more 'comfortable' in that sense due to that but the Chinese always felt the fear of hitting that rock-bottom because you actually know what it's like.
I could be wrong though, just my IMO.
