To those uninitiated, this movie has 2 other elements (aside from super power inner strength), the art of disguise (something like fake mask and voice change in Mission Impossible movies) and the art of hitting acupuncture points to freeze or mute the victim.
These are all part of the fantasy world of wu xia.
A movie based on a novel... just like Harry Potter movies.
I sort of like it. It's something like another surprising entertaining movie (also has Donnie Yen in it), Painted Skin - if you don't know the characters in the novel nor seen the past tv shows on the novel.
I would say go watch this new movie instead of hanging on too much to past actors playing Kui Foong/Qiao Feng... it will be missing the latest James Bond movie just because I think Sean Connery was the best James Bond.
qiaofeng life is a tragic, felix is good at the heroic part, but i really see leung take the tragic role aptly, anyhow, its personal liking.
wrt adaptation especially historical and wuxia, tvb lack resources, but know how to make series that well received by most. china producer are more capable to make series that have much depth and more adapt to the original or history (provided the atmosphere is more open and free at certain period), thus hujun version is not bad.
China production have much higher budget and so their production and special effects are better. They also have the advantage of filming in locations that better reflect ancient China. However, all the current adaptation casting are terrible as they cast idols instead of actors. The better China adaption was their first one with Hujun and Jimmy Lin version is not bad.
TVB production has always suffered from budget constrains. So they look outdated today but the casting by TVB is the major advantage as the directors and producers rarely selected wrong actors and actresses back in the 90's and 80's. The pace and script are better compared to China's production which I sometimes feel draggy despite better budget.

The problem is can it tell a proper story in movies format which is probably 2 or max 3 parts only.
Look at last year Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre. Part 2 was terrible and rushed.
I think it is the only time Wong Jing failed in selecting actress too
i thought beggar sect chief uses pole/stick or bare handed to fight? how come he uses sword?
That is one of the hairy moments I had expressed... (eg, the jade staff was inconveniently unavailable to him at that moment and he needed a weapon). Do understand that when he did use Subdue Dragon Palm and Beat The Dog Staff (please do not crucify my translation), it was quite impressive.

Sometimes specialising is better than learning more styles.
Yang Guo learnt so many styles but I think he really level up when he specialised Dugu swordplay techniques and come out with his own palm style.
Yes but compare those two... Both excel the 18palms. And GJ learned more martial arts from other master like Zhobotong too so GJ have advantage.
Wuxia lore is funny, each martial arts have certain movements so it's either your martials have a lot variations or very strong inner power. Only up till Linwuchong that throws this logic away
