I'm not very versed with SSD/HDD but am thinking of adding a second SSD/HDD to my Legion 7. Currently it is using the stock SSD which is a SKHynix HFS001TDE9X084N. Does anyone have any recommendations on what can go well with the stock SSD? Actually, is it better to have 2 SSDs? or just a single SSD and HDD works fine?

I think everyone will recommends samsung evo SSD
If it's too expensive for you, you may try crucial.

Suggest you try google around is there any degrade in performance in new model as I no longer follow SSD trends

samsung 980 is dramless, need to get 980 pro
crucial's nvme series... has been kinda lacking, mostly QLC

Kingston KC3000 is a decent choice

My legion 7 model uses pcie 3.0, would it be better to use pcie 4.0?

Both the 980 pro and KC3000 are both pcie 4.0 right? The legion 7 I have uses pcie 3.0, would it better to get a pcie 4.0?

i wasn't aware that your legion only supports pcie 3.0. nevertheless, kc3000 will work on pcie 3.0 and will run at max speed of pcie 3.0. alternatively you can have a look at transcend MTE220s. the price between these two for 1TB size is about RM100+. MTE220s runs quite hot under full load (like copying large files).

kc3000 is cheap now you can even take it out and install in your newer notebook if you want to do it in the future.

Which generation is your Legion 7?
The latest generation for Legion 7 is 7th gen. Different generations have different configurations

If you are not sure, go to Lenovo support website, and type in your serial number then it'll display something like the image below

The G4 for that ThinkBook model means it's the 4th generation

No issue to put Gen 4 NVME, the disk itself is better rated then most Gen 4.

980 Pro is the best, and next recommended are those from SK Hynix. Great warranty support. Go for 2TB or 4TB if suited your budget. The bandwidth will not be saturated, as these are among the best reliable NVMe.

The best is put everything within the Laptop, as big as you can afford, first boot NVMe and second NVMe (if there is space for it). Dont bother much about PCIe 3.0 interface or not, get the best disk you can afford. Will last very long and very very high performance.

kc3000 not recommended, low endurance.

kc3000 will not even occupy max pcie 3.0 bandwidth, got for better NVMe brand/model.

It's common to run hot for this babes.

kc3000 tbw
512GB – 400TBW
1024GB – 800TBW
2048GB – 1.6PBW
4096GB – 3.2PBW

these are more than enough for most people.

even on pcie3.0, kc3000 will still run faster than most other native pcie 3.0 ssds.

i've commented that transcend mte220s runs hot at full load. mine with copper heatsink still hits > 80deg. while it is known ssd will run hot, what more when installed in a laptop, mte220s temp is really over the top, more than my other ssds (hynix, 970 pro & kc2500). though i have no issues with the drive.

please comment with some substance. lol.

TBW just lifespan, not true measure of performance.

Yeah, the model I'm using is 16ACHg6. KC3000 sounds tempting, I'll have to do some research on that...does it come with 2TB?

Your Legion 7 is the 6th gen version
You can forget about installing an HDD as Legion 7 G6 doesn't have a SATA slot

But Legion 7 6th gen has 2 x M.2 slots so you can install another M.2 NVMe SSD in your laptop

Just go with Transcend MTE220S. Their 2TB is the cheapest on the market with DRAM cache built-in

The link below is the cheapest 2TB MTE220S in Shopee
