Border Crossing Matter

I will consolidate matters pertaining to border crossing such as insurance, telco roaming, required paper work, petrol stations and etc. here.

Anas dan Fairuz is a recommended place to get your Thailand insurance from.
Anas and Fairuz Asia Services
019-670 3107
https://maps.app.goo.gl/DYyXb76tZBQsp8G59

They also have branch in KL so you can get insurance before coming up north.

Most people traveling with personal vehicle would cross border at bukit kayu hitam since PLUS highway directly end at that border crossing.
Be prepared to spend 3-4 hours there especially at the Sadao Customs House for the import permit if you cross during school holiday.

A better option (during high season/school holiday) is to ride further north from Changlun and cross at Padang Besar.

Nobody is at Songkhla Customs when there's hundreds of people at Sadao.

The most recommended telco simcard for us tourist is DTAC.
There's a few option ranging from AIS and Tru.

But most people would recommend DTAC. I also only use DTAC when I'm in Thailand.

Current DTAC tourist package is 7 days at 15mps unlimited usage for 150 baht.

True not bad.. I got full 4G reception even at the border side of Myanmar from Maesot to Mae Hong Soon, nowadays 5G tower had already been constructed near those rural borders these days..

in the nutshell, does not matter what telco you choose, 80% of signal coverage is good in Thailand..
*
A guy in FB say DTAC prepaid can be extended to 365 day validity for 10 baht.

Gonna try that. Don't need to keep on buying new number everytime cross over.

Or, Durian Burung and Ban Prakop  if you willing to add 30 km more of your journey to Hatyai..

Here most of Thai Immigresyen and kastam officer can speak Southern Thai Malay slang..
*
Yeah durian burung crossing is really empty.

Nice scenic road leading to the border house.
And its closer if you're heading towards Pattani.

Phuket and Krabi is sunny and nice weather with not a single drop of rain.

Going back to Malaysia later today hopefully can pass. No more money haha tongue.gif

As for insurance, you can get it before exiting Malaysia or after you get into Thailand. I paid 140 for 1 year for bike >150cc (60 for 3 months, 90 for 6 months). It is easy..you will see signs.
*
Compulsory insurance?
Or compulsory insurance + voluntary insurance?

Usually Thai kastam will ask for the insurance cover note before approving the import permit. So insurance must do before we cross the border.
You got the import permit approved with no insurance note?

wanna ask if anyone knows, if we ride our bike to thailand, our driving license is good enough right?
but if we rent a bike(thai registered) can we still use our license or need to apply for IPD?
*
don't need international license. just use your malaysian license is enough.
well thai approach is that no license is needed, until you get into an accident.
if you rent a bike they normally won't even ask for a license.

do note that most (if not all) of these bike rental doesn't have voluntary or compulsory insurance for the bike.
so if you get into an accident you need to pay for the people that you hit, the vehicle that you hit and the bike that you rent.
they want cash so best to have some land that you could sell quickly. knock.gif

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

tried topping up.
still no 365 days option.
only thing that i get is 10 baht for 30 days validity.
topup 20 baht get 60 days validity.

at least now i can access the sims using the app and make sure it's active when i go there.

after topping up 20 baht to get 60 days validity, can still use the internet or need to top up to purchase data?
*
Validity is different compared to data package.

Topup and get sim validity for the number.
Then use the topup to subscribe data package. Data package also have data validity.
Same approach as malaysian prepaid sims.

Eg. you topup 20 baht and get 60 days validity. Sim is valid for 60 days.
Then you use the 20 baht to subscribe 1 day data package for 18 baht. So you're left with 1 day data package, valid for 1 day and 2 baht left and 60 days sim validity.

+1 also the bail bonds and loss of life - including any roadkills if they should dispute you for killing their beloved pet, which can involve local courts, and then will involve bail bonds, and vehicle being impounded

Voluntary insurance covers ~900k Baht of the above, ~RM120k

Insurance shop in dannok was closed when I arrived there at 8pm.
Will visit again to compare insurance prices in Changlun and across the border.

Judging from the price printed at the insurance cover note, should be a lot cheaper across the border. Maybe.

You're welcome.
Even padang besar is less crowded compared to bukit kayu hitam.

Anyway you guys going to Thailand don't need to bring in so much cash.

Can use this prepaid debit and use it across the border.
I particularly like the wise card. Can convert RM into other currency inside the wise app and everytime you use overseas it'll charge in local currency.

user posted image

Like a local Thai debit charge card with Thai baht in it. Saves a lot of misc fees esp those 1-2% conversion fees.
Can also withdraw at Thai ATM but will kena like RM5-RM10 fee every withdrawal

Battery powered pumps do exist you know. tongue.gif.

But anyway, I have both a 12V and USB socket on my bike.

While I hadn't had to use my pump on my own bike to fix a flat, I have used it to top up my tyre especially after airing it down slightly for off road, and make short work of my bicycle tyres. Helped some guys stranded on the road and RnR before also. It's a good thing to carry when travelling...even if you do not need to use it.
And for those that do have a 12V power socket. Please turn the pump on without load, then only attach to your wheel. If you turn on the pump while attached to an semi inflated tyre, it might be too much a load and blow the fuse.
*
Battery pump is usually heavier and bigger than an inflator with no battery supply.
And no charging or battery damage issue. I always carry a 12v inflator with me on long trip.

QUOTE(zarakiken @ Jan 31 2023, 09:42 PM)
For the USB and 12V socket you DIY or let shop do??? I tot of DIY using Y connectors so no need to strip any wiring…
*
Direct plug to the battery without going through any sockets or fuses.
That way the pump will have enough current.

Later once I'm back I'll post a pic.

Malaysian side slow? Usually the borders I went thru is slow on Thailand side.. Malaysia side just drive by and hand them passports to chop.. Unless that day many Thai tourists coz they will need to come out and finger print, like we go in Thailand.. The same day I came back, my friend also stuck for near 3hours at Danok.. Haha..
*
From my experience it's the Malaysian side that is slow.

Thai side the passengers can get out of the car and go through the immigration counter inside the building. Leaving only the driver to go through the lane. Much faster

I may be wrong but i think ur idp needs bike specific license?

If not mistaken thailand recognizes Malaysian licences right? But if u no appropriate malaysian bike license still kena saman
*
yes park the bike then go stamp inside the office building with pedestrian. there's a bike counter.
it's usually faster than stamping outside with all the cars. can cut queue if you want since most officer don't care. if they ask you to turn and stamp in the office then need to turn.

https://www.wapcar.my/news/do-i-need-a-spec...in-thailand-625
don't need International Driving License/Permit since it's part of ASEAN agreement. all asean countries recognize other asean country license.

but some still kena saman. usually police wanna pau some money. don't argue too much.

That's way too far bro.. More than 200km difference.. Was comparing

KL - Gua Musang - Bukit Bunga
KL - Ipoh - Gua Musang - Bukit Bunga (This route is the landslide route I think, so can skip)
KL - Kuala Kangsar - Baling - Bukit Bunga

Anyway, as another bro told there bombing In Narathiwat, might just cancel the trip..  cry.gif
It is not exactly in Golok anyway.. Might reconsider again.. Still got time.. 😅
*
If you wanna go to Golok, then just cross over at Rantau Panjang. but i don't think there's anything interesting in Golok.
Betong is better.

The most scenic route for bike i think is to take Karak, then exit to Bentong.
then to Raub, to Sungai Koyan.
from there i'd take the road to Ringlet, to Cameron Highland, to Lojing Highlang.
head to Pos Blau then to Gua Musang.
from Gua Musang you can take the road to Dabong, then Jeli
or you can take the normal Gua Musang to Kuala Krai, Machang then Rantau Panjang.

i'd take the long, scenic way if i'm on the bike.

I've been to Betong 1-2 times / month for the past 3 years because my partner is from there.. But now back to single already, so thinking of exploring new places which is not too far for this coming long weekend..
Ya I think Karak exit Bentong is the closest route.. But the plan currently on hold due to some risk of safety.. Maybe decide again by then when the date is near..
*
can cross over at wang kelian and head to pak bara. or take the coastal road to krabi or phuket.
otherwise don't cross over to golok je. stay at kota bharu then ride back through coastal road to terengganu, pahang to karak.

QUOTE(mADmAN @ Sep 3 2025, 02:06 AM)
Damn...how long is the ride on that route?
*

extra 100km only.

the road from sungai koyan to ringlet is one of the best riding road in malaysia IMO.
i would purposely go up to cameron highway through simpang pulai or tapah just to take the road to KL.

start after subuh, have early lunch at cameron then arrive at KB in the evening just nice to check in hotel.
