During poorer times I just replace the cylinder myself

For inkjet printer, auto-clean will be executed periodically if you turn on the printer. Therefore he's not wrong, technically. But it is not apply to laser printer with currently you're using since you mentioned a drum unit. Low range Brother printer is like this, especially you're using non-genuine cartridges. I bet your drum model is DR-1000 icon_idea.gif
