Last time got rumours of crooks being able to detect laptops in cars. They then breaks in and steals the laptop. Is this an urban legend or real? Is it safe to keep laptop in car?

I left a tote bag in my car hanging using the chair headrest hook

In tote bag only got umbrella

But it look promising i guess… my car kena break in and the tote bag and umbrella gone

Edit: point is if rm10 tote bag also can be enticing no need to risk leaving anything in car la in our low income nation

Some cars like the Peugeot 3008 got secret compartments below the rear hatch and passenger footwell. I usually hide there. Cooler too.

what cannot be seen, unlikely to get stolen.

if they can't see, they don't know the worth of it

always keep your car internal empty.

robbers like to spot cars with lots of soft toys. guess why?

No such thing la! Until today, no one could even show what these so-called detectors look like. Plus, the thieves are all low-class variety smash and grab types. More like they tailed u from the office to whatever location like makan place or shopping malls.

This is the biggest mistake one can make. You should assume thieves are like monkeys. As long as those monkeys see/hear plastic bags, they auto assume it's food inside. The thief in your case assumed the tote bag contained something valuable, so they broke into your car and grabbed it.

probably they use heat detector to check ur car if there's any.

best is dun leave valuable thing in ur car la, if visible probably will gone case.

if put in boot, best you put it when you get in the car. not while u reach ur destination and park first only put, u won't know if there's anyone notice and do the job later.

Hide the laptop in boot. Do it before you park, do not put it in the boot after you park and the criminals watching for prey.

If you forgot to put it in the back, stop somewhere to store it first and then only enter the parking area.

Another thing is don't leave loose coins lying around in plain sight. They may amount to < RM1 but they may tempt thieves.

Yes for closed boot sedan, provided you don't open the boot to let the world knows there is a laptop lab in there before you left the car. After parking, straight ciao from car.

No need to say laptop. My friend car got broken in within 10 seconds through the window and all they stole was a couple of rm1 notes, his badminton racket bag and car perfume. All unveiled on a cctv.

22 years ago confirm they got syndicate follow those that carry laptop bag. Ayam work in IT building and we always see the same fella follow people to their cars. That time laptops very mahal. Even got unmark police car waiting outside our building to catch them red handed.

I'm not worried about my data as all on personal cloud. Nothing on my laptop. It's the cost to replace the laptop and car repair that can cost thousands. So, never leave mine in any vehicle. Better safe than sorry.

Also see what car u drive.

I drove my 7K 4x4 with multiple colours for the exterior (accident but never bothered to respray) and accidentally left my Dell Precision inside the rear passenger area and forgotten to lock it. The auto lock was not working then.

After 5 hours of meeting, went to the car and saw the laptop still there but the new Myvi parked next to me got broken into instead.

Most ppl who got their car windows smashed and stuff stolen are usually :
1. Being targeted.
2. You (whether subtle or obvious) let ppl know you have valuables in your car before u left your car. Ppl don't care what you have in your bag. Any desperate ppl saw ur bag/computer bag in your car, they will just smash and grab.

I once lost my laptop in a shopping mall parking lot. The vehicle was locked and showed no signs of theft. Only notice when I get home. Since then, I won't leave valuables in the car anymore.

My car got broken into once. Happened in Pavilion KL. Break in through rear quarter panel glass, unlock from inside and disable alarm.

Laptop and hard drive in boot, sunglasses, loose change all gone. Best thing is the thief cleaned my car nicely. No glass shards etc.

For those who said put in boot ok so far no problem, let me tell you it’s just incident waiting to happen. I spoke to the IO handling my case. All these are seasonal. Just when you realize its safe and no more such case, it’ll strike again.

If you even hang a big plastic bag which look like have something valuable conferm pecah cermin.

If smart don't put valuable items inside.

Even in Murica they give up. Write notes, leave car unlocked but put a few dollars inside so they can loot it and don't break glass. Unless homeless pipul, druggies and horny pipul, then car safe and still clean.

Can't detect but store it into the boot before leaving office and not at the destination. I used to do it for years but I no longer carry a laptop these days.

Most who are targeted expose their bags, store it at the destination or show-off their lanyards or tags of well-known companies giving laptops (this was in Penang).
