Thanks for the explanation. Coupled that with the WapCar article I posted earlier that really cleared up a lot of my doubts.

However, last part of the puzzle for me is: if the engine on its own (like in the turbo variants) can do 10-12 km/L, how come when the engine is used as a generator we can get better fuel consumption? I thought there'll surely be some loss in efficiency because you're using engine to charge battery?

We need to realize that cars are equipping themselves with more tech and growing in dimensions with every new generation because they want to compete with their rivals on the spec sheets. Civic was much cheaper in your father's era, but it was also much smaller and slower. Then came City and Vios to fill the void in that cheaper segment. As City and Vios also get larger, I'm sure another smaller series will be born to replace them.
