Reason for #2

There was a newspaper report a few days ago interviewing the director. It was in the Star if i remember correctly.

He said something along the lines of

Does that answer some questions now? These vampires aren't supposed to be like the ones in most other movies, or even anime for crying out loud. I guess most of us are too used to seeing "civilized" vampires, and seeing these guys go wild becomes a shock to them. These guys are vicious killers who want blood, that's it.

They needed to get to a "safe" building that was solid enough, and had a generator with power so they could survive until sunrise. The vampires did, but like the people said, the attic they hid in was well concealed.

If you pay attention to the subtitles, the vampires say something along the lines of (read spoiler)

I know, I can't remember what exactly they said, but its something like that.
They need food, they find a way to get food, they get food.
End of story.

It's called "30 days of night" because there is no direct sunlight for 30 days. The vampires don't have to go anywhere because there is no sunlight to kill them. The "Light" you see during "daytime" in the movie is reflected sunlight, which does nothing to them.
