hey guys.

Owner of a HP 6828 here.

i was wondering, what do you have on your PDA, other than the ones that comes with the unit itself?

I'm more of a light user , so i have very little in games or non-essential programs.

Installed programs:

SPB Plus
Opera browser
TCPMP
uBook Reader
Slide2unlock2
iContact

that Slide2unlock2 is a program that acts similar to that slide lock in the iphones. and it works too!

also, i have a question here:

how do you set the phonebook in WM5 to list by first name?

thx for reading this thread

lol, i use smart movie cuz it converts the .avi into a superbly small file, hence storage friendly.

for music i use TCPMP or Windows Media Player

but it could be my imagination, but TCPMP seems to consume a lot of power when playing music compared to WMP

heya fellas,
i don't think it's such a good idea to discuss pirated softwares here. Dunno who may be reading. Plus, giving pda expert d label of 'pirated software vendor' may not be in their best interest as well.

Can get them into a lot of trouble.

Hi pipedream,
I'm using Mortplayer. It has a 10 point EQ as well as effects such as reverb, 3d surround and bass boost. If ur a bass head like me, u might wanna check it out. N it's free too. biggrin.gif

because the HP 6828 comes with free pocketmusic player, which is quite nice to use.

Btw, to those ppl who play movies on their PPC, what software do you use to convert your videos?

Kerazul: you remember my niggle about the first name sort in Contact?
i solved it. It seems that you need to change the File as in outlook to your specific way ( first last instead of last, first) which will then be sorted out correctly in the contacts in the PPC.

now if only there is a better contact software out there...

it is alright so long as we stated those are commercial software. at the least, we have never disclose where and how to get them *FOC*. it's a norm that ppl know most computer CD shops sell pirated CDs. as for the pda expert labelling, yeah, i agreed we should stop hinting them as pirated pda software provider (if we do).

Techno + reverb 5/10, Surround 6/10, Bass boost 5/10

gives a loud bassy sound and surround thumbup.gif

i always put name as one whole string under "first", the "last" is a total crap, for me. the "file as" is not amendable and always follow "first + last".

there're many contact software i the market such as contact pro where full contact image can be flooded on your screen upon incoming call, and a few more iPhone-alike FOC software. personally, i still prefer the build-in contacts tool, 3rd party's seem to have slower response although there are many add-ons.

Hi sniper on the roof,

I put a screen toggle switch on my SPB Pocket Plus drop down menu. So i can access in any program (well, almost).

Hi seaotter,

I generally do as callmepaper does - putting the entire name under first name. When I shift devices next time, saves me the trouble when I sync cross-OS's too.

Ooooo... ok I know wat u mean ady. haha... first, u'll need a software called AE Button Plus. From there, u can assign a button to toggle ur silent mode.

I put mine as my recorder function coz I almost NEVER use it. So i long press the button and my Dopod goes into silent mode. Just like SE phones!

isn't it hardware-dependant? but i do come across some ppl use register tweaking such as "Framerate", "BitRate" to imrpove the camera/recording quality. end to end, it still boils down to the max quality of the hardware.

Hi pipedream,

now that u've mentioned it, actually there IS a software that may improve ur camera quality.

Ateksoft CoolCamera

But do take note that it only improves the picture digitally. Ur hardware is still a limitation. Ur using a 6965 right?

Hi Sniper on the roof,

u can install SPB Pocket Plus and uninstall all the other rubbish that clog up ur memory. I delete almost everything leaving only the Today Plugin, Close Button and Safe Mode. Altogether only take up abt 500kb. VERY lean n mean

hi all,
to use mp3 files as ur msg tones, u must first convert them to .WAV files (which will blow up the size of the file). Then, copy those files to the "windows" folder on ur device.

next, go to "Sounds and Notifications" and u'll see the files there.

To enable MP3's to be used as message tones, u'll need 3rd party software such as Photo Contacts Pro or Pocketmax Phone Alarm which is quite expensive.

Hi ychwang,
It's actually ok to install more programs in ur touch. U only need to limit those programs which runs in the background such as task managers or today plugins. Other than that, it should not affect ur device's performance as long as u install them on ur memory card and not let them hog all d on board memory.

Also remember to stop all running programs from time to time and u should be fine.

you're supposed to paste in the root folder of either your device, or your storage card.

so try this, after converting to .wav

paste in Mobile Device
(dun put in any folder, just place it there)

or

Mobile Device>My WIndows Mobile Based Device>Storage Card

it'll work then

Hi pipedream,

how long is ur wav file? I think there is a length limit applied to the message tone. I've been putting it in the Windows folder since the begining of time and never had a problem.

Hi pipedream,

I've tested the steps I prescribed with a 30 sec clip (over 6mb) and it works;

1. Copy file into "My Device -> Windows".
2. Go to "Start -> Settings -> Sounds and Notifications -> Notifications -> Messaging: New text message".
3. Select file from the drop down menu.

I tested Baronic's method of copying it to root directory and it works too.

Hmmm... perhaps u can try soft reseting ur device after u've copied the file to see whether the file appears or not.

Hi shymx,

I'm using Mortplayer as my alarm. Free!

yeah... all of us try damn long to do it ady. And all of us just resort to putting everything in the first name row.

Unless u don't mind spending on a 3rd party PIM replacement software called pocket informant. Then it'll give u the option to change the order of ur contacts name order.

what bluetooth headset r u using? When I use my R35 + Sony MDR EX71 with mortplayer, I tune down the amp also to balance the sound. Because for 1 reason or another, the output from the R35 very heavy on the bass ady.

But it sounded alright.

RAM = Random Access Memory, the memory power you need to execute a program, the more you have, the faster the execution time. hence, you cannot install your program here.

ROM = build-in memory to store factory-defaulted programs, just like your personal computer's BIOS. it is also being used to store operating system such as WM5/WM6, after all, you will still have some left over spaces to install other programs (usually very limited). program execute from ROM is faster than storage card.

Expansion Card = a.k.a storage card/memory card, most programs installation goes here. you should, always trying to install new program in storage card, unless, you have plenty of ROM spaces (e.g. O2 Life) or the program force you to install into ROM.

hth.

I think what he said is this software: My Mobiler. The software allow you to show your PDA screen on the PC screen, then you can use your mouse to control your PDA.

RAM is Random Access Memory. Pretty much you can write any data here. This is how pre-WM5/WM6 devices used to work. They install their programs in RAM. But starting from , WM5 changed the whole RAM concept , RAM is now well RAM...It will be 'Program Memory' , it will no longer serve as a 'Storage Memory'. Certainly , there is no more fight over Program/Storage. This is pretty much dedicated for Program Memory. Thats all..You can't do anything in here. Last time you could adjust to get more storage or more program memory but now its fixed

ROM , read-only memory. Pretty much like what callmepaper said , this where your 'OS' resides. Its also called as the 'Hard Storage Memory' (for WM5/WM6). Anything you install in 'Device' will be written to ROM. Thats why even after a battery drain. You still have your data there kicking. Smart eh ?. Before this , you could not do anything to ROM , on older devices..Extra ROM Space are often used as 'Storage Disk' aka iPaq Storage Media. But now its being utilised as 'Storage Memory'.

Storage card = nothing much to elaborate on

128MB ROM + 64MBMB ROM seems to be standard. Although there are 256MB ROM + 64MB RAM and even 1GB (Atom Life ?...Something like that). It does not matter. 128MB ROM is sufficient enough for your just about anyone

VERY lean n mean

hi deanni_77,

tap n hold d top right corner of ur screen and select options when the menu comes out. Then select "tools" and "uninstall components". I'm using a light version of SPB Pocket Plus. Haha...

Hi devilzzzz,

now that u've mentioned it, there IS a few that I'd like to share with u guys. Fancy using ur ppc like XP/Vista?

Quick Menu here will make ur start menu operate via drop-down menu just like in XP/Vista.

When complemented with WKTask, this will enable u to have ur open apps on ur top-bar, just like how XP/Vista have on its taskbar.

I'm using them now. Really cool!

Hi deani_77,

Styletap is the PalmOS app emu on WM. I've tried it b4 - the rendering is not that good and it doesn't appear "correct" but it still works. The functions of the app I mean.

Y would anyone wanna hybrid over PalmOS software onto WM? It's the command-based OS and the original PIM that makes it tick. Otherwise, most WM app pwn PalmOS app ady.

THT gadgets u got palm OS and u dun have the game Edge!

GOOOO PLAAAY ITTTT NOWWW!!!!

its a super super super super game! sooo nice! just like diablo!

envy envy envy, onli for palm OS

@Kerazul, Edge pawns our pocket pc games, so thats why pocket pc users use styletap actually, just for edge, but like u said, makes the screen smaller and all that crap, so not nice lor. and for my styletap a bit buggy also. sighz.

Haha... I remember during my palm days, I used to have this crappy ugly map called mapopolis. Damn fugly I tell u. biggrin.gif

The good thing about PalmOS is no matter how many softwares u put inside, it will not lag at all (launcher conflicts don't count).

heh, sometimes I wish I can just magick my Dopod to become command based. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Mapopolis is ugly? Maybe that explains why they lost so much of market share to Malsingmaps... biggrin.gif

And i have to agree with u there, the point on not lagging... Palm really doesn't lag, even though some of the apps i listed are the really big memory-huggers that are more than 1MB in size... Great job by Palm there, something that i hope my PC can actually accomplish! laugh.gif

Well, as long as it doesn't render ur current OS obsolete then it's ok. WM7 is gonna be a bridge between windows mobile and windows vista. Both gonna be able to do more or less the same thing at more or less the same speed / efficiency.

Still ain't command based tho.

thought this question has been asked many times?
anyway, for ringtone, put your mp3 files in the root directory of your sd card, "my document" folder or \windows\rings folder. for sms tone, you need to use .wav file, location is the same. there are commercial software that able to use mp3 as the sms tone, an example: photo contacts pro:

nope. have not use it before. though, i do use photo contacts pro before, but find it a little lagging, so ended up not using any software for customised ring/sms tones.

is there such software? if the sms is unsuccessful, you should get a notification on your pda screen straight away. if the server failed to send to the receiver, there's no way for your pda software to check the status unless the telco had established a communication link between your pda software and their server. i'm rather curious why do you want the same message to be re-sent to you if unsuccessful?

I think what he meant is that it will attempt to send AGAIN automatically if failed.

I don't think got such software. If ur msg is not sent, an error msg will pop up to tell u that it's not sent and a copy of ur msg will reside in ur outbox. U can send again from there. Not sure if it will automatically send it for u again later. It should tho

For video player, Windows Media player just enough for me. For managing important data you may try pocket wallet or something similiar like that. It have password to access the data.

Just found this software by ppl from XDA Developer. Sending your SMS from desktop/notebook but it was a 30 days trial.

Pocket SMS

Mozilla Commits to Firefox for Windows Mobile

Last month, the Mozilla Corporation promised to devote much more time and resources to a version of its web browser for smartphones. At that time, though, it didn't specify which mobile operating systems would be getting a version of Firefox. This has now changed.

Christian Sejersen, who is heading up this project, has added a post to his blog that lists the OSs that are being targeted.

There is already a version of Mobile Firefox for Maemo, the version of Linux being run by the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet. Mozilla is also considering updating this for the Nokia N810.

But it isn't going to stop there. Sejersen also says a version for Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6 is in development that will be available soon.

Goals for Mobile Firefox

In his blog post, Sejersen lays out the current goals for Firefox mobile:

1. provide Mozilla's standards-based open-source browser engine, optimized for mobile, that can be embedded by device manufacturers and others;
2. produce a full-featured mobile browser including support for XUL-based add-ons, delivering on Firefox's key principles of ease-of-use, security and accessibility;
3. grow the Mozilla community in the mobile space;
4. provide tools and documentation to help developers develop, debug and deploy web applications;
5. do all of this work in the shared Mozilla source repositories so all platforms, desktop and mobile benefit each other

More information is available on Mozilla Mobile Wiki.
