While we’re just ten days away from the iPhone 15 finally being unveiled, a new report in Korea suggests that those who want the brightest screen or best battery life might be better off delaying their upgrade for another year.

According to The Elec, Apple display suppliers LG and Samsung are encouraging the company to adopt micro-lens arrays (MLA) in the OLED panels for the iPhone 16.

MLA is a layer of microscopic lens placed on top of an OLED screen, and is found in some TVs. These take the light that would normally be reflected inside the panel and redirect them to the front of the display.

This has two big advantages over OLED screens without MLA, explained by LG here. Not only does more light facing outwards mean that you get a brighter screen to look at, but it uses the same energy consumption — meaning it doesn’t impact battery life.

Alternatively, you could drop the brightness from current levels to boost battery life without the user noticing. Either way, it’s a big improvement, considering the screen is one of the main battery hogs on any given smartphone.

But there are two drawbacks to the solution which prevent it from being a no-brainer for Apple to implement.

The first is that the redirection of light comes with a cost: reducing the viewable angle of a screen.

That’s probably not a big problem if you’re just using your iPhone to browse the web or play a game in your hand, and you could even see Apple spinning it as a positive for privacy if it prevents the person next to you shoulder reading your emails. But then again it could be a dealbreaker if you like to prop your phone up to watch movies.

The second drawback is less of a hurdle. It costs more to produce screens with MLA, but given the margins on iPhones, you can imagine Apple happily absorbing this (or passing the cost on to the consumer with a price hike) if it made the phone markedly better.

Still, at the time of writing, The Elec says that Apple is yet to decide one way or the other, so it’s probably best not to base your buying decision on what may or may not happen in 2024’s handsets.

The USB-C-toting iPhone 15 is widely expected to be revealed at the upcoming Apple event on September 12. Buyers of the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus can look forward to devices inheriting several features from the iPhone 14 Pro including a 48MP camera and Dynamic Island.

Meanwhile, those opting for the iPhone 15 Pro will likely get the faster and more efficient A17 chip, a programmable Action Button and a periscope lens if choosing the iPhone 15 Pro Max model.

Yes but 2020, the iPhone 12 release year was the first year Apple.com does preorder for Malaysia and everyone else follows suit. That time nobody knows for sure bust just follows what is stated on Apple’s website. I am damn sure there is no preorder for iPhone 11 Pro Max other than the 12am launch date purchase because launch date was on the 27th and my planned proposal to my then gf is on the 28th. 

So ya that’s why I have this great love with Lazada Apple authorized reseller.   

I’ll be going down this route. My line is tied to a contract till 1st October, so technically I should be able to pre-order… kua… in any case, if I don’t, I’ll just walk in after the launch and try my luck wherever there is stock. In no hurry to get the phone

this question should be easily determine after analysis done

1. usually people will choose contract without doubt if they get phone/mobile subsidy from company they worked for, e.g.: RM100+ subsidy, then they can go for contract with cheaper phone

2. I am with maxis contract every 2 years previously, ended coming Oct for 13 pro (using 14 pro now buy outright)
  - my case is, I am paying RM128/month (which I need more data all the while), I get around ~1400 subsidy from maxis, so my 13 pro two years ago i paid ~RM39xx (RRP5499)
  - 1400 divide to 24 months is ~RM58

But last year I add on maxis fiber RM59 (30Mbps), my postpaid become unlimited, without subline needed as a consideration, I can just downgrade to RM79 package vs RM128 (RM49 saving per month)
so the question come here,

option 1: i go with maxis for 15 pro (RRP5999), maxis subsidy 1400 for MOP139 plan per month, phone is ~RM4500
option 2: i buy outright pay 5999 without going with maxis contract, i pay MOP79 plan per month
if you think maxis will offer MOP109 for iphone 15 series, then the subsidy I am sure wont reach 1400, telco subsidy is all depends on how much you pay for the plan, it can be more, can be less, end of the day you need to take the subsidy amount divide by 24 months contract and versus monthly plan cost

I will weigh which option is better for now
zerolution is another story, zerolution phone subsidy usually less than normal contract (correct me if i am wrong)

p/s: now phone plan with 5G (DNB) is quite cheap, i would prefer option 2 for now, so i dont get tie with a contract since my data is unlimited

No problemo! Clear cases do tend to have fingerprint smudges all over them so I like to get one of those “carbon fibre” like stickers for the back of the phone and stick it on the back of my clear case, hahaha…. My wife thinks my OCD is next level… putting sticker on a phone case…

I think leather cases are nice… if you take care of them…. hahaha…

I used Nomad leather case with my 12 Pro Max previously and they tend to scratch very easily.. also, kenot kena water.. otherwise… very ugly…
