I encountered few situations before ya.
1. They requested for me not use my leave & I was properly paid for all the days that I worked during the period.
2. Fully utilised all leave so they calculated a last day in the office.
Sometimes, in some company handbooks, they don't really mention this sort of finer details because its on a situation-to-situation basis (such as ongoing projects, training needed for anyone taking over the work etc) so by the end of the day, its still between your HR and direct boss to work things out.
