Do you have the original structural drawings? If not, it's safer to do new foundation as the original structure may not have been designed/built to carry up additional floor load. Also is it existing link house or semi D house, if yes then not advisable to do piling but other type of foundation as piling will risk cracking adjacent neighbour's house.I have recently acquired a single storey house of 42 years old.
