Update February 2023
Did colour along started on January with a group on Discord we have Mythographic books theme until next April. Each member who joined need to finish at least one page of any book from the series.

I just got my Derwent Studio pencils as Christmas gift last December. Took awhile for me to get used to using them. My budget Brutfuner pencils didn't blend well but the cheapest set,Deli went smooth as the base for Derwent Studio.

Book: Mythographic Voyage by Joseph Catimbang
1. We called this page 'Dream Stream'. I messed up with the colour arrangements but hope you all like the fish as much as I do. Took a month to finish I was ill for a week the colouring got postponed.

2. Purple Dragon and Glowing Horns.
Not my favourite but finished this in few days only. Quick process.
user posted image

3. Snail and the cocoons.
Took more than two weeks to finish. I didn't know how to tackle those cocoons but here is the result.

How's your colouring progress guys? Don't forget to share yours here.

How do you get to those fiddly parts do you use reference pictures before painting? I did that but in the end picked my own colour choices. Still awful because quite difficult to get good highlights and shadows.

Some you might like. You can search more on Big Bad Wolf and Bookxcess on Shopee. These are old stock books but original copies and inside still new. Much cheaper and easier to get.

Yup. edy showed those pages to Mat salleh colourists on Discord group. They said colour choices ok but still need to practice on highlights.

To get expensive pencils or not, still in debate. Some said don't waste money as beginner better practice first using budget supplies. Some said YOLO je I'll be happier seeing results done by high end pencils. Entah la.

Buy! (If you can afford it)

Expensive also got a few levels. So choose what you like.

Artist level colours are not only easy to use/apply (you will be happier painting it), it also means colour fast (for me this is important and for my oil paint I will try to avoid colours that are not colour fast), and the toxicity studied and recorded.

Having said that, since we are talking about artist level colour pencils, make sure your paper is also good.

Come come I teach TS and everyone interested in colouring how to practice.

If you have colouring book scan them so you can print for cheap.

Unless you are selling your art I highly suggest just use cheapest colour set from stationery for all your practice. You can slightly mimick top quality colouring tools simply by dapping a soft cotton to sumdge smoothing it out.

Ok thanks will consider it. Maybe start with small set first since I'm not professional artist lol.

Speaking about papers. Aiyo this is another headache. All my books have different paper types from mid to low end quality. There's some has very thick cardstock type with super smooth surface. But when I coloured them I just can't feel 'the tooth' or paper texture. It just felt 'slippery' when colouring and can't take many layers. For RM35-RM65 priced books it is frustrating. 😭

Should I just scan them on different papers?

I love budget books too BBW has some interesting titles which is very hard to get at bargain price. I'm super happy when I got Emily Shen Wonderland for RM13.50 only last year.

I wished they have more stock for Hanna Karlzon and old Kerby Rosanes books they are too quickly sold out. Crazy intricate artwork but I want them for collection.

You mean blending the colours? I have tried few techniques using blending stumps and cotton buds (good for getting soft tones parts). For soft pastels I just dab and rub the colour using tissue papers. Not sure if that's the correct way lol.

On YouTube I saw pro artists using solvents on their coloured pencils artwork. I don't have those things around here.

Usually a lot on youtube one they also kinda follow and learn from the ones that pay a fair amount on their equipment to learn "properly" ...... its valid, but you know la, malaysia here if you no make money first before jumping into "art" hobby or if you are starving passionate ppl with no art background this hobby will cause you significantly to be good at. At least like 2yrs. So I always advice novice to start with cheapest way, some really good artist use cheapest things on the market also can make it work, so if the cheapest way can get you to improve to their point then can consider part time or pro and turn those practice into money so you can enjoy your hard labor.

Of course if you wanna buy proper equipment for practice at the earliest possible way also not wrong, just pay more lo ..... laugh.gif

Like those nice coloring books, once you color liao need to find more .... some don't cost a bomb, but still a good sum in long term ...... if cheapskate like me then scan, and print on as many paper as you want. When you reach that level you feel you are ready then finish the coloring book as a closure ... for extreme cheapskate you can board jack sparrow ship and print super quality detail art for practice .... at the expense of another poor artist.

I've tried the most expensive available before on an event booth, of course it feels nice .... but comparing both practicing still depends a lot on your time spend rather then what equipment you have.

Its a very subjective manner, some people like to jam in kl with a ferarri , while some just want the car aircon to work in a jam.

Is there a way to transfer the design to a paper, like using a lightbox?

You should use a proper paper used by hobbyists/artists. Good paper won't change colour (if not white), won't turning brown or sporty due to asidic content.

Last time when I painted using pastel, I used to buy paper sheets from nanyang arts

This was my first miniature that I did in years. trying out different techniques this time. Previously I just do shading and dry brushing, but this time I used multiple layers to glazing to build up the highlights slowly. It's more time consuming, but you get smoother colour blends, and less to clean up after compared to dry brushing.

Basically, it's mixing the lighter highlight colours with a medium compound to make it more transparent, then slowly applying it in multiple layers to build up to the highlight that you want.

Then finish off with just a little bit of dry brushing for the final highlights.

The colours, mainly go and look up starcraft photos, videos, comics, etc to get an idea on what colours to use.

Some of the weathering marks on this one, is done using water colour pencils. they're really good for layering.

So base paint job air brushed using lacquer paints. then weathering done using enamel and/or oil paints.

Then final details using water colour pencils

If you need books with wider range of drawing styles/subjects can try Book Depository. I haven't bought anything from there yet not sure how long it's going to deliver to Malaysia. Those Korean books most I got from Taobao at very cheap price. If you need links for books in the pics let me know.

Here's another shop selling colouring books at reasonable prices. Judging from reviews they're original copies as well. https://shopee.com.my/product/82182688/3992...83-1656440200.9

There are many more popular books by English artists like Johanna Basford. Somehow I just didn't like her artwork, too tedious with lots of doodling. However you can try her World's of Wonder available on Shopee.
Quite pricey tho I just don't believe in buying colouring books more than RM70 for starting. 😖 But if you wanna splurge go ahead many artists recommended that book for beginners as well. https://shopee.com.my/product/70790205/1360...83-1656436926.9

Nice. When I was playing Sims 3 decade ago I used to do some simple colouring and texture replacement on some of the objects in the game as my own. Nothing fancy just done everything in Photoshop. But to try create new clothes and learning about meshing were just too much for me.
The most annoying part was some kids I know in the community can create simple bow tie bikinis and mini ballerina tutus from scratch. While I just can't do it lol.

I'm a late starter as well. When I was young father used to say I'm not good with coloured pencils so better just switch to paint using water colour. Never would I have thought 2 decades later I'm back reliving my childhood. But this time I started from basic with guidance from internet. No more nagging and frustration from parents and teachers why I can't be good in arts like other kids.

I never had good memories in art class during school days. Now it feels so liberating finally I can learn about colouring and enjoying my own work.

Yeah, thats the thing with official training, you're either on par with the rest of the class or youre dead and you feel like a loser the rest of your life. But the age of internet has changed things, so what if you take a week to learn modelling when other kids take 2 days. Sooner or later you will catch up, wont be working in Weta or something, but you can feel good creating (mostly) anything. Keep this thread active ya.

I also started late. At 35yo I decided to get a formal introduction to oil painting so I attended a class with a prof from China (she married a local businessman). Recently I go and meet her again for painting advice.

When I was at school I was known to be good in painting (watercolour and gouache). But once I entered uni I hid my painting talent from others, and after that I hardly paint.

If now I tell my friends I can paint, some of them will laugh at my face lol.

Impressive. What colouring pencil you used? Colouring as hobby?
*
Yes. Currently I use Brutfunner and Luna Staedler (school grade). All budget pencils.

Ok what every enthusiastic hobbyist memang spend a lot. Mine isn't super duper cheap either it's gonna reach to that point as well if I'm gonna splurge on more books and art supplies. biggrin.gif

Finished this last night took me 2 days to colour it.
Background done with soft pastels (which resulted greenish effect on the clouds) it's so messy. Reaching balance between highlights and shadows still difficult.
I followed the hatching technique by the illustrator to add in the shadow areas but I can't get correct dark grey hue of the browns on the feathers too tired to swatch everything on paper. And the trees supposed to colour them in green instead of pink here they stood out really weird looking arrgghh.

My opinion? Choose which ever path that makes you happy.

Its your outlet for release.

I'd stick with faber castell, luna or staedler though.

TQ for the comment.
Good thing you see empty clouds instead of greenish smokes haha. I guess my camera didn't catch the mess from yellow and blue soft pastels get mixed up but they're quite obvious in the book.

The details did tire me out. Going to relax after this maybe colour something easy like baju and roti.

Eslite is Taiwanese based shop no? I'm afraid they won't have good selection of Japanese and English colouring books like Kinokuniya. Especially the rare copies.

Yes dry media only. Coloured pencils for the crane and background done by soft pastel (rubbed the colours in using cotton pad).

Actually the book can take watercolor pencils just fine papers are quite thick.

thanks.

During school days, i could barely control the right amount of water when painting with watercolor pencils.
So during those days i prefer using dry media only. less messy tongue.gif

Same here I'm still have trouble using watercolor pencils. The highlights and shadows all over the place. Plain coloured pencils easier to control.

OMG thanks so much for this update.
I got a friend who wanted that Millie Marota postcard box version and Attanasio's Peter Pan book. I'll certainly going to hit her up with this. 👍

Yeah BBW is my first choice and recommendation for great book choices to all beginner colourist here. I was lucky enough to get Amily Shen's Wonderland book for RM17 only as compared to standard new version which almost RM70.

It's ok you can look around first and thanks for stopping by this thread. There are many cheap and easy colouring books or painting by numbers available online for purchase. Some users here doing more advanced stuff like model painting and digital drawing which are really cool also.

Can browse some YouTube videos about adult colouring etc to get some ideas on what might interest you.

The key point here is to enjoy what you doing. If you got more questions about colouring or any art related stuff can post here.
