I have Beta1 which I installed in VM. The lack of search menu in the start GUI (I BLAME GOOGLE FOR THIS) turns me off tho. And DreamScene is not supported yet in this Beta. But it's fast. EXTREMELY.FAST. compared to RTM

everything really. File transfer is quite fast, and the overall response time is also a bit faster. Also better options such as which HDD to defrag, which drive to use as bitlocker, etc

QUOTE(clawhammer @ Sep 28 2007, 11:08 AM)
I guess everyone knows how terrible Vista is and perhaps this SP would help enchance the overall performance plus speed itself and not to mention those bugs.

While I respect ur VIP tag, I found that you comment unacceptable. It's quite fun to use and all OS has bugs anyways ecspecially initial build. XP took 5 years to mature, thus why are people quick to complain about Vista? It's not like the bugs are major, more like better optimisations and also some screwed up ppl at google want us to use their desktop search. Bad drivers from both ATi and nVidia didn't help the cause much, and also the fact that many major companies sees this as way to get quick buck by not supporting old hardware/softwares anymore means that it's never really the OS's fault in the first place.

Beta are not meant for full usage. It's only for testing purposes. Even I dual boot into it. It might be possible but not advised

- "all OS has bugs anyways"
True, that includes vista, xp, mac os, linux, etc

- "XP took 5 years to mature,"
They took quite a while to mature, IMHO. Luckily XP SP2 is stable enough.

- "screwed up ppl at google want us to use their desktop search"
This is to give competition for desktop search. More competition = kills monopoly =  better products

- "Bad drivers from both ATi and nVidia"
Not really an OS problem. Linux also had their fair share of problems regarding driver availability. It's good that ATI and Intel drivers are now open sourced.

- "not supporting old hardware/softwares"
People do not have to upgrade their OS if their existing OS does all the job you want well.

To add, Vista's development started shortly after XP was released in Autumn 2001. Microsoft had lots of time to develop Vista and the deadline was pushed many times. But when Vista finally came out, it disappoints. I find this unacceptable. They develop a new version of OS very much longer than Mac OS releases its new cool OS and linux (think Ubuntu, openSuse, Fedora, etc). Not to mention mac os and linux eye candy are far cooler (think compiz fusion - see it's youtube video, http://youtube.com/watch?v=bvnQE1EAEZY), functional and uses less resources than Vista. Not to mention Microsoft pathetic attempt to mimic linux's "Enter your password for Administrator Privileges" thing.
.
Back to the topic, Microsoft says don't bother with the Service Pack 1. See here. http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9790540-7...l?tag=nefd.lede

Let me give you a snippet

IMO, game developers should now make games for linux and mac os as well. If I'm not mistaken, OpenGL 2.0 is superior than DirectX10 - need to confirm. OpenGL 3.0  development is now underway.

Depend on your take. Honestly, I loved the built in indexing, and I used it on XP. while you might say less monopoly = better product, that takes does not seem to make sense in some cases. Windows Search is and definately will always be superior than the phatetic google desktop search. The most lolwut case is that Real Media vs Windows Media Player. On one hand, you have a shareware, which is full of adware, and have many faetures locked untill you pay for the full version. On the other hand is a full freeware that you have bundled with the OS, does not mind if any other software want to make itself a default player, have a good library, burning and ripping feature, and you don't have to pay anything to use it. And yet they are deemed the bad guy here just because it works well. Ironic.

= Not supporting old Hardware/Softwares
I have a quite new canon all in one scanner, printer, copier. During beta testing for Vista I already alerted Canon that the driver did not work for Vista, and they send me a nice reply that they will make a new version. Then Vista launched and I did not received any new driver. Thus I called them and ask them about it. Their reply? "We feel that you need to buy our new printer. We will not make a new driver for Vista on this". I was flabbergasted. mind you, this product is one of the new product that they released at the end of 2005, thus there is still much shelf life in it. It was a blantant attempt to make people buy their new product. It's up to the consumer wether that they want to upgrade their OS.

On SP1, did you really read the whole news?
QUOTE
What surprised us is that Microsoft is really downplaying this service pack. Why? Because, unlike Windows XP, Windows Vista includes automatic updates, so for most users the Windows Vista SP1 release won't be dramatic.

exactly. which is what Vista was intented to do all along and XP cannot do. XP has too many holes and without autoupdates, the patches seems like a new OS to the users.
QUOTE
The more you use Windows Vista, the better it gets. So why not get started today?

The reason DirectX was created (it was hailed as teh creation of the century by PCGamer) was it's ability to let the OS communicate directly to the hardware without the developer have to learn complex coding. It was never superior to OpenGL, but more friendlier to developer.

Well, WMP wins hands down against Real Media. I also do not see any serious issue regarding WMP being the default media player. I tried Musicmatch a year ago and I think it is a pretty good software. Unfortunately, I haven't use it for a long time now so I don't know how it performs now. Alternatively, Amarok 2.0 (linux music player& manager) is being ported to windows. It will be interesting to see how this software comes up against WMP and itunes.

Real loose to every player there is out there. Which is why I feel it's weird that it wanted to come up against the free WMP, when you need to pay to get teh full usage of Real Player. Free players are now becoming more and more common, that I think it's not Real vs WMP, but Real vs everything else.
