Hi,

I plan to buy car, family consist of me + wife + 8m/o son + unborn child. Car will use for daily drive,(fetch 2 kids to babysitter), and use as family car long distance travel(maybe once a month). Office and babysitter distance is only like 20minutes from my house. Do you guys think SUV or Sedan better for us?

for driving pleasure, Sedan

pratical, still sedan

cheaper to maintain, is still sedan.
but why SUV more popular?

i can only tell u, UMNO also popular here despite all the corruption.
*
understand. but please no political.

QUOTE(Jasonist @ May 10 2022, 01:03 PM)

*
so u like SUV? why?

QUOTE(treblecase @ May 10 2022, 01:04 PM)
Depends..are u an Ah Beng then look no further than Vellfire/Alphard

Sensible ppl buy a car your budget can afford & maintain properly over the long run. That’s the safest car.
*
Noted, any recommendation what car?

QUOTE(matrix88 @ May 10 2022, 01:05 PM)

*

QUOTE(gahpadu @ May 10 2022, 01:08 PM)
SuV easy to put childseat /baby inside. No need to bend.

Or compact MPV like coming alza also might be a in list
*
ok thanks suggestion but alza maybe not.

QUOTE(terradrive @ May 10 2022, 01:08 PM)
if drive alot at night or early morning without sunlight, especially on dark roads, it's easier to see on SUV because higher vantage point.
*
good points usually drive during daytime. so no issue of dark roads.

*
my budget around 130k sir

QUOTE(metalfire @ May 10 2022, 01:08 PM)
what's your budget?
*
130k around there +-

QUOTE(9m2w @ May 10 2022, 01:09 PM)
Well used to be a sedan fella then when using my wife's Aruz found it quite convenient to strap kids on and off their booster/ child seat. Changed to an SUV for myself and its easy on my old body to get in and out also

But other than that like the guy said above, sedan maybe more practical at times and a better drive. SUVs, the bigger they are, handles like people movers.
*
Thanks, never drive a SUV. Previoisly Sedan & Coupe. currently in SUV list is Corolla Cross, new HRV, 2008

QUOTE(Mr Mercedes @ May 10 2022, 01:10 PM)
Wagon. Offers best of both worlds.

V60, Mazda 6 Grand Touring, Suabru Levorg are good options.

508 GT sw if you don't mind used cars.
*
too expensive my budget only 130k.

QUOTE(miyakochan89 @ May 10 2022, 01:17 PM)
on serious note, and practicality point of view. I really think Nissan Serena is a super good buy.
Don't underestimate its shape and sizes. Because I saw first hand a family with baby twins, and how convenient it was for the parents to just put the baby chair, and put the babies in and etc. Because the doors are so huge. The parents don't even need to bend themselves, climb on a step or anything like that. Just super convenient.

I also saw that old people literally WALK into the car, instead of having to bend lah, step up lah..you know how it is.

That car always gives me a very good impression as an amazing family car. And more afforadable then alphard or so.
*
Agree but this car I will use daily to work also. i dont think I can drive Serena to work daily. Maybe 10 years from now huhu

QUOTE(fantasy1989 @ May 10 2022, 01:24 PM)
you can ; but if you have more thing need to bring ..suv will be easier..especially if you need to temporary unplug your child seat and put it back to boot just to fetch your parents
*
Why? If not mistaken, boot size usually sedan bigger than SUV. SUV have heights advantage only in term of size.

QUOTE(Zot @ May 10 2022, 01:24 PM)
If you live in KL or Selangor, then SUV. Cannot predict when flood

I live in Negeri Sembilan area not affected by flood.

I thought you already opened a thread ?

I still suggest sedan especially Honda City.

Since your new born and baby car seat going to be rear facing config as long as they can. You will appreciate the extra room after you installed the car seat.

And sedan is easier to ingress and egress.
*
Thanks but still undecided, but tomorrow will test drive a few car. what do you think about new civic fe compare to city?

QUOTE(brkli @ May 10 2022, 01:34 PM)
overall easier to maintain (generally speaking). balance between comfort and stability (at least for toyota sedans). also depending on the driver and passenger, some might say is easier to put things in/ go in and out of it. especially if you are not tall..
*
agree, just wondering why so many people decide to buy SUV nowadays. Guess I should test drive 1.

QUOTE(toiletwater @ May 10 2022, 01:34 PM)
SUV. Sedans' sales has been dropping steadily for the past few years. So Sedans are being designed and marketed more towards younger gens by being made more sporty or trendy.

SUV suitable for all types of drivers. It isn't too hard to park. Easier to drive in long distance driving. More boot space. Doesn't cost as much as years ago.
*
Agree except the boot space sedan should win compare to SUV. I think 1 of SUV disadvantage is small boot space.

QUOTE(fantasy1989 @ May 10 2022, 01:35 PM)
you need to carry and bend your body to put into car boot

but if you feel that is perfectly fine for u then why not just go for sedan
*
I never drive SUV, interested to know the visibility advantage it has over sedan. maybe need to test drive. other than that, i think i prefer sedan more.

QUOTE(teslaman @ May 10 2022, 01:37 PM)
income enough? suv cost more and more fuel
*
enough. downgrading from current car.

For young working adult + family. Never go wrong with a Japanese SUV. Safe bet is Honda CRV.

overbudget. only budget around 130k.

Talk budget first...
*
around 130k.

QUOTE(ifourtos @ May 10 2022, 03:36 PM)
accerlation. Sedan ( due to lighter body )

Brake. Sedan ( due to lighter body )

Corner. Sedan ( due to lighter body, lower body )

Changing Lane. Sedan ( due to lighter body, lower body )

Suspension. Sedan ( due to lighter body )
While F1, Hypersport cost user million to go lower, lighter....
SUV go the OPPOSITE DIRECTION.
I guess this is what people define YOLO.
*
agree. thanks

QUOTE(jaycee1 @ May 10 2022, 03:39 PM)
SUV or MPV will have a more "squarish" rear door aperture and higher roofline. This helps a lot trying to buckle in toddlers and infants into car seats. Assuming you plan to use child seats. Saved me a lot of literal head smacks on the roof of the car strapping kids in.

Bigger windows will also help potentially car sick kids if they can sit higher and see outside.

You will need a big boot opening for kids stuff...like strollers which can be difficult to load in a sedan.
*
Thanks for pointing out these things. Seems like if main concern is baby, the SUV should be the choice.

QUOTE(myteam94 @ May 10 2022, 03:41 PM)
Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 is within your budget

Yes, for sedan, this or Civic FE are in the shorlist.

When shopping for a car. Bring your child seat along. Have it fitted and see how easy you can get your kid in and strap them in. Bring stroller and what ever baby crap you have and see how you can load them in.
BTW when your wife is 8 months pregnant, she will appreciate a seat that matches her hip point, so it is easy to just slide the legs in and out and get in/out. A sedan will have a seat lower than the hip height so you have to sit DOWN and get UP. Just get something reasonable and not an SUV that is too tall.

Btw the civic has a fairly low roofline. Do the child seat test first.

Take it from experiences of a parent to another parent. Unlike /k forever alone. My wife jokes I bought a car for the kids instead of for her. She got her own car now that the kids are older and can strap themselves in. My youngest is 9 and is still on a booster seat. The eldest is 12 and don't need one now.
*
Thanks Jayceee for the details explanations. CUV in my list are Corolla Cross, 2008, new HRV. Budget around 130k. Will set for a test drive maybe tomorrow.

QUOTE(geforce88 @ May 12 2022, 10:12 AM)
sedan more practical because it has a proper boot space covered and separated away from passenger cabin, and also more comfortable than SUV due to lower height.

unless your area is prone to flood, then a slightly higher SUV (or pickup truck even better, more ground clearance) makes sense otherwise no point getting one. and most family-oriented SUVs are not that tough to begin with, your typical shiny bling bling CRV CX-5 are certainly not Toyota Fortuner.

another viable option would be MPV. not talking about Alphard Vellfire Serena kind of MPV but something like Exora, Sienta, Wish etc. they quite good to drive and perfect for family outing.

ps: compare apple to apple in terms of size and pricing, not Ativa vs. Bentley ok...
*
Thanks, agree, after test drive, I think I prefer sedan over SUV. But my wife as passenger said sitting in the back of SUC are more comfortable compare to sedan.

I didn't have MPV in the list because of the size of the car and the fuel consumption. It will be used as a daily car, to send my kids and travel to office. My area so far not flood issue. When I sat in the SUV, I was overwhelmed by the its size, too big for me.

QUOTE(lee82gx @ May 12 2022, 10:35 AM)
For RM130k-140k, I would choose Corolla Cross (hybrid) for 4 pax.

I have tested it, it is comfortable. The benefit of an SUV style is always the seating height and it is less hard on the knees and back when you bend down etc and need to pick up babies and stroller and luggage. Entry and egress also super easy compared to certain sedans.

In the same category you also have Subaru XV which is even smaller but more expensive. And also potentially the new HRV, but it remains to be seen what are the trim and engine options you can get at 130k (hopefully a lot) and for now it appears bigger than the outgoing model, yet we dont know for sure how practically bigger....??

The downside of Corolla cross is the size again in terms of width, it will be narrow for 3 adults side by side. It depends if you really need that tiny extra 2inch of hip / shoulder width. Why Toyota didnt package this wider, I am not sure. Then again they show with CH-R they can miss the entire package and not suffer.

Due to this, I opted for Civic which will accommodate full 3 adults....although just barely. It would've better if I went for a D segment but budget limited. A SUV style is also great when you want to collapse the rear seat to buy a baby crib or ikea furniture.

I directly overlook any vehicle that does not have any ADAS, for 130k.

To complete my story I have a Nissan Grand Livina if I need to do weird carrying duties...
*
I test drive corolla cross and corolla altis yesterday. Definitely prefer altis though both interior are quite outdated compared to others in the same segments. the comfort and handling of altis is very nice.

Didnt like C.Cross because of the manual foot brake, outdated interior, too plain for me. And I think Altis is still bigger than C.Cross. Haven't test drive Civic and Mazda 3 Sedan.

QUOTE(g00glesYYl @ May 12 2022, 02:19 PM)
looking forward for new HRV too. Hope it is lower than 130k for the top spec.
*
Should be around this price according to Honda SA. And she said will probably launch on September.
