Hi guys, I've just recently gotten myself a XZ3, everything is fine, phone function are top notch, the only complain I would give is that the NFC tap and pay (not QR pay) i still unable to do the settings, lack of navigation gesture (Android 10) and last but the most important thing for me is making phone calls, I am talking about the old school phone calls whereby you call using the traditional method and not the whatsapp or wechat kind, anyone facing this same problem as me? if so I really need advice on how to resolve this issue, as I rely heavily on making phone calls on my daily task. Thank you in advance captain(s).

Hi,
I owned an xz3 six months back.
I was on xox and had no issues with calling. Maybe recent move to remove 3g networks is hurting your connectivity? You can try replacing your sim card for a newer one in case it might be that.
I have already sold my xz3 for a pixel 3. About to sell this and try another phone too.

Just a quick update, today I've just replaced my sim card, and the traditional phone call issue still persist, I come to the conclusion that I can only make a phone call if the line is very very good, if its below than LTE+, the call will either not go through, or the party from the other end can't hear clearly during the calls. Any advice to resolve this issue? As my previous Phone Xiaomi A3 has no issue to make phone calls even if the line is not perfect.

If you are using the traditional call method, this means that you are on 2G during calls
Current telcos has no VOLTE support for Sony models especially for oversea models

With VoLTE support, the calls will be on the 2G network which is crap and very similar to ART900 or ATUR450 analog calls.

The only way is to change to a better phone with VoLTE support.

You have to forgive me as I am not quite familiar with these terms "VoLTE, ART900 & ATUR450" as I am just a common folk who is just a huge fan of Stock Android, but let me try to level with you guys here, these terms u speak of are the requirements to make a traditional phone calls, and most of the Malaysian Telco has close to none support on Sony phones, therefore the only solution for me to use traditional call method is to change my phone. Man this is a tough pill to swallow ngl, I am feeling kind of sad that I bought the XZ3 and I am unable to fully utilize it.

U will need a brand new phone with support for Voice over LTE (4G). In short, a new 4G or 5G phone not older than 3 years old.

If you have experience in rooting phones you can go through this route: root>disable volte checking in the main file (i forget which one)>unroot
This is the only way to get volte in any phones if the telco does not officially support volte for devices

If you insist of getting new phone, you may keep that sony as a backup phone

Really appreciate everyone's reply, I just got this phone recently and not planning to change it anytime soon, if rooting is an option to enable a reliable Phone Calls, then I would like to learn what Rooting is, and what are the issues that I must be aware when rooting a phone. Hopefully someone will an experience in rooting is able to guide me, that would be helpful. As I just found out that "OK Google" Does not work in XZ3 either, really disappointing for a flagship phone to have soo many issues.

More like the 'Google' app itself is not up to date or you have a faulty microphone or something wrong with something
This phone is already 4 years old.
Its like buying iphone 6s in 2022

The only good thing i found that is good is the cpu itself
nowadays apps are getting resource hungry that if you want to future proof getting a 12gb ram and above in 2022 is much more worth it

May we ask the telco (both SIM 1 and SIM 2)?

There r still Axiata's MVNOs don't have VoLTE yet.

Rooting/Unlocking Bootloader on certain Sony phones will break certain functions like camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. So, be cautious...

I assume you bought the imported Japanese set right? Phones sold in Japan have a different kind of NFC tech (called 'Osaifu Keitai') to match with their own payment system, which is probably why you can't tweak the NFC settings for your needs here.

Another thing to point out is that Xperia XZ3 was never launched in Malaysia, so there's probably no way to enable the VoLTE (4G voice call) that others have mentioned here, even if you can it would be a huge hassle. So the only way is to either stick with 2G voice calls or get another cheap phone to use alongside your XZ3.

Oh dear.
Sorry to hear that it didn't work.

As for rooting, you will have to check if your bootloader is unlocked. The JP model usually has a locked bootloader so you would not be able to root it. I tried to install a custom ROM like I did on a previous handheld (XZ1) but failed to do so on the XZ3 due to unlucky. Great phone though.

Has anyone here managed to get VoLTE working on the Xperia XZ3? I have tried different kinds of ROM and OEM files on my SOV39 models but to no avail.

I think best is to check with your service provider before buying a phone especially those AP unit, not sold in Malaysia, extremely rare brand with no service centre and no sales centre in Malaysia, there will be a lot of issues as phone makers usually handle their software by country/region ... they won't care if you buying something illegally somewhere ... and operator will not be able to do anything as well ...

Kek just found this thread. Was gonna grab a cheap jepunis sekenhand unit for the more up-to-date android and NFC but then realized it doesn't have a bunch of compatible features like decent voice calls. Thanks guy for saving my money. Guess I'll either go with an older ipong or the S10. My current phone has Volte but its version of android is so old that some of my apps can no longer update. I just need something that's at least 5 versions ahead of what I've got so I can use it for a few more years. That's what I get for buying Huashit I guess...

I have no idea what you were smoking when you wrote that. Defeats the whole purpose of buying a cheapass temporary phone if I were to spend 2k for a new one. I might as well just bite the bullet and buy an iPhone instead and have pretty much have guaranteed updates for the next decade.
