Hi, I'm getting slower than 30mbps on speedtest over openVPN. I'm not sure if this is normal or is this a bottleneck of the Asus AC68U which is running the openVPN sever

Host side
Asus AC68U
Maxis fiber 30mbps

Client side
Unifi 300mbps

Tried a few different clients, including iPhone 12 and got similliar results(including using mobile data - Digi)

openvpn is quite complicated, you have to tweak the server setting and client setting to match up the speed.

original setting might not give you the best performance.

Try wireguard? Seems like the better option
Oh your router model probably not supported yet

probably bottleneck at your router compute ability, because data is encrypted

Hmm, so far I only touched the general settings other than for IPV6 which is located in advance, any suggestions on which settings I could change?

Yup, only PTPP and OpenVPN is available

Hmm, is there anything that I can do to reduce the effect by any chance? Also btw, for routers how high of a cpu usage(%) is too high for a router? 😅

Are you currently using the stock Asus firmware or Asus WRT Merlin firmware?

Are you currently using the Instant Guard app and option in the router?

Change your VPN protocol type like some has suggested.

Suggest using SoftEther, WireGuard, or VMess/V2Ray. Dump OpenVPN it's already showing its age with very high overheads and inefficiencies.

hmm.gif , was able to get the download speed up to 20mbps after disabling compression, encrytion is already the on 128 bit encrytion and it's also on UDP by default

Stock firmware, the VPN sever options were PPTP and OpenVPN sever only

This router doesn't support Instand guard

Hmm, would prefer if it’s being run on the router instead as I don’t have any spare PC available 😅

Read up on ASUS wrt Merlin on it’s website and found this

Performance optimizations to some CPU-bound components like OpenVPN

Wondering if it makes a difference? Also can this be installed remotely(over the internet)?

It will make some differences in terms of performance and stability depending on the router model. Some tweaks and enhancements while maintaining all the router functions.

In order to install the WRT Merlin firmware you will need direct access to the router because you will be uploading the firmware file to the router.

I see the was able to have remote web access to it(like on local network except it’s over the internet) and there’s an option to upload the firmware file, is that sufficient? Or do I need to physically do things like switch off the wall switch?

You can try it via the remote web access.

But it is recommended to directly connect the router to your laptop via LAN cable. Normally I do it this way.

Yes, your existing settings will be preserved.

But it is better to make a backup of the current configuration before proceeding to flash the firmware.

hmm.gif , I'm getting ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED when connected to openVPN on PC but on my iPhone 12 it works fine(can load website) after flashing asuswrt merlin firmware, I've tried remotely rebooting the router, reseting the openVPN sever settings and manually reenter the settings.
