Dear all LYN sifus,Good afternoon.
i am renovating my house right now.
the existing wall color is light blue/purple color.
i wish to paint it white.
My contractor told me the most cheap and budget friendly method shall be maxilite which cost around RM 160
I went to paint shop and tell told me had to primer + paint which cost around RM 580
while some shopee shop owner told be I can straight away JOTAPLAST Max which cost around Rm 158

I wish to consult all LYN sifus that had such experience.
if I want to paint a house with budget friendly cost, which option shall I go for?

well normally i do not recommend skimping on paint quality as i want my paint to last very long.
its a big hassle to re-paint a room when you have furniture already.
but personally i would primer and then paint.

but among the choices above i would go for the nippon matex.

The contractors usually stick to the method they knew. Put primer to ensure color paint stick and cover those unevenness and stain on wall. The reason is simple; they do not want to risk doing the same job twice if the owner is dissatisfied.

Nowadays (starting like 10 years ago), the paint has been improved and many claimed no primer required. I did not see Jotun saying no primer needed (maybe I missed) but stated that the paint (usually the acrylic paint) has good hiding property and cover unevenness very well.

I'd just go straight with color, 2 layer, and done. smile.gif

the above are mostly cheap paints, not much difference. i personally use matex for ceiling only. i dont think u need primer unless you plan to use nice color interior expensive paint.

Existing colour paint is not terribly old, and no issue with damp wall right?
Just paint over with matex for A4 paper white.

After ten years my matex still hold up perfectly.

This is usually done if the existing colour is dark or diff colour, to "lighten up" the background so the satin glo colour can "pop" well.

Hi, if my wall after hacking & plaster back do I need primer before paint? Do I need any special treatment on the hacking part surface?

I plan DIY, what type of paint should I look for? Prefer those easy maintenance type, can wipe out the dirt easily.

Brand preference only lah, Matex do not dilute with more than 2-3% water *be very kiamsiap with the water for best results*.
KCC more solids but harder to stir.. it dries thicker
Matex very beginner friendly, easy to apply, my personal preference
Jotun.. somehow I find their economy paint not as cheap so I never use

Yes nod.gif otherwise cement suck up water like a sponge and you will definitely see the line there.
Easywash for colour paint.. else any matex also can for white. If it stick properly to the wall its quite easy to wipe down with soap and water.. I use economy white for kitchen wall and frying stuff the oil splatter everywhere so no point for me to use good paint.

Enough to cover the bare cement mortar (hacked area) plus a lil on the sides. No harm to apply more one.

You're painting on good condition existing paint so no need sealer. It would be good to paint over with economy white so that the true colour of new paint will not be "tinted" with dark old paint lah.

The original colour looks darkish. If you just paint 2 layers of cheap paint, there is a chance of color bleeding through. Might notice this only after few days. The walls got a bluish tint. End up painting another layer. Too many layers, then risk of paint peeling.
I think better use a primer, sand a bit when dry, then one layer cheap paint. The white should last longer.

If wall already white, just clean a bit, make sure flat and smooth since you are using paint with sheen. 2 layers satin glo is enough.
