That company who hired him is kinda sus...

Normally... fresh site reliability engineer requires at least a BSc computer science degree.... CKA doesn't give you a passport directly to a high paying site reliability engineer job especially you have 0 experience.... otherwise every tom dick and harry would just jump into the CKA bandwagon.... it takes only 3 months to get CKA certified and it is not that hard...

Anyhow.. not saying the story doesn't checks out.... in this day and age... a lot of weird things that make no sense does happens....

Stumbled upon this thread and since I got asked this a lot so might as well do this anonymously.

Job Title : Chief Actuary
Job Desciption : Whatever deemed actuarial
Age : 38
Years spent in company : 10
Company : -
Industry : Insurance
Tenure : Permanent
Employment Level : Management
Experience before joining (years) : 4
Highest paper qualification/ education background : Actuarial fellowship
Location : KL
Average Working Hours Per Week (incl lunch hours): 40+

Basic Salary + Fixed Allowance : RM48k
Performance: 3-5 mths
Flexi Working Hours: Partial

Now let’s be clear, to succeed in this field you will need a lot of hard work and perseverance (9-12 professional exams, average pass rate of 30-40%, recommended 150-200 study hours per exam), technical and soft skills that set you apart from your peers at each level unless you have connections (at entry level every year hundreds if not thousands of graduates fighting for just a few openings), and a LOT of lucks which means your hard work may not always pay off. I consider myself one of the lucky ones. But then if you don’t confine yourself to Malaysia, there are a lot of international opportunities especially if you are qualified.

So consider yourself warned.

Let's be real here.... actuaries are lucky because of BNM and also the industry in general demanding certain position requires said qualification....

Actuarial exams aren't as tough as CFA or even many other professional exams out there....

If the difficulty of qualification = high pay.... then whoever achieved top in the world in any chartered qualification... should automatically be CEO then??? Even if the qualification itself is easier.... we are literally talking about near impossible difficulty because you cannot even redo/have a second shot in getting top in the world...

Passing actuarial papers is just an eventual means as long as that person doesn't give up... I'm not from the insurance industry but I know even in your industry ... there are also only a small number of people holding chartered insurer title despite the exam is much easier than actuarial for most people.... however... those who held the title don't get the same luxury as qualified actuaries because BNM never gave a mandate that only chartered insurers can hold the Head of Claim/Underwriting/Marketing position...

Besides... difficulty of exams are also often subjective because I personally know a few qualified fellow actuary cannot get through chartered insurance exams and gave up.... one person might find stats/numbers easier but theories/research difficult....vice versa

Get out of here with that logic dude. Do not diminish the difficulty of passing actuarial papers.

Though I agree with the rest.

CFA is known to be the hardest exam based on google... not my own words whistling.gif whistling.gif

Again... every exam has its own difficulty because some do well with numbers but can't do well in other studies... vice versa...

Similarly... some people can pass medical exams easily but having a though time getting through accounting exams doesn't mean medical exams are easier than accounting...

Like I said... I actually know quite a few people who have fellow actuary but couldn't get through chartered insurance exams... but that doesn't mean actuarial exam difficulty is diminished...

I can't stress this enough but if actuarial want to boast about "I got high pay because I achieve something very little people achieve" then whoever achieved top in the world in chartered exams should automatically become the CEO in their industry since it is literally the hardest thing anyone could ever dream of achieving... especially if you are talking about people achieving it coming from third world countries... literally almost ZERO

How's the pay/benefits of similar role in Malaysia (Intel/Oppstar/Infinecs?) ? What about similar opportunity in Singapore?
My parents would prefer me to work closer to home but at this career stage, I would priorities career building. What's your thoughts?

You are stationed in Taiwan and they pay you in Ringgit?

Performance bonus looks very good... 4-12months!!!

Annual Leaves so little....

When you say no EPF... does taiwan not have any form of retirement fund???

RM12k equal in Taiwan should be quite nice I think since their cost of living is almost similar to Malaysia...

Paid in Taiwan dollar.

Retirement Fund only available for permanent residents.
Employer contribute 6% and employee can choose to contribute another 6% max.
I'm still 3.5 years away from qualifying for PR application.

Cost of living overall maybe like > 10-15% EXCEPT housing prices  biggrin.gif
Rental is okayish about 2k for studio.
But a studio unit can cost > million ringgit in certain locations.

So... no PR means zero contribution by both employee and employer??

How many years in total require to qualify for PR??

You living in Taipei city center??

After 3.5 years.... it's like Annual increment + another 6% brows.gif brows.gif

What's the annual increment % for you??
