how do you work on technique? do you practice technique-specific runs or etudes(is it?) or choose songs that focus on a certain technique? example? i need to work on my alternate picking now..
Grab a metronome, your favourite scale and start picking your way through those BPMs FTW!
...personally, I don't learn solos to improve my technique coz I get discouraged easily.
...but say there's a pretty fast alternate picked run like at the end of "Silent Night, Bodom Night". Heck, the run is standard 3 note per string, so you can probably just practice that over and over and over and over again until you can play it up to speed or faster. Since it's such a standard run, you'll probably find variations of it in other solos... so you kill one bird with 2 stones, and his friends and again and again and on and on...

Oooooh, and I find that pointy shaped guitars are better for picking runs than suprastrats, which are nicer for arps...
