Living cost in KL is too much. Unbearable and everyone is just money minded. No money no anything.

Cost of living is very high, comparable to cities like Melbourne or Canberra. I would like to seek another place to migrate and stay, with much lower cost of living

Is East Malaysia good? I heard cities like Kuching or KK are as advanced as Penang and JB. So I guess it's good. Plus, I met many east Malaysian. They are friendly, nice, kind and very helpful. Not materialistic at all.

How's the cost of living?

Only can say for kuching

Food there is reasonable and affordable. Rm3 can get you a big pack of nasi lemak which is very filling. If I'm not mistaken it's a e-mart there

Kolo mee 4-5 ringgit only. Raw materials for cooking food also cheap

Rentals there also relatively cheap

Overall is a nice place to stay, people there are friendly. No racing racing.

Downside, not much entertainment. Pretty chill and quiet kind of life

Life in KL is very expensive. I rent a condo unit, rm2700 per month. Food daily one meal at least rm25 including drinks. Put asides activities with friends and other entertainment like spa, movie, gaming, car modification

KK here.. advance city? hahahahaahhaha... I'm crying with tears.
It feels more of a big town than a city here as you can cover the whole KK "city" on foot within a day, and the cost of living is definitely no difference than KL..

Food is expensive, rent is expensive, electronics are hard to find unless its a major brand, public transport are almost non existence (thankfully grab/maxim exist), pilaks everywhere, parking almost always unavailable, some shops starts not selling alcoholic drinks, after 7pm almost nothing to do here.. and many more to complaints.

long story short, you stay KL and dun come here.

it's 2022, inflation is global... you can only escape it by escaping the system you're in.

Be independent on :-
Food (Grow own food)
Water (Make water catchment area and system)
Energy (Solar Panels and wind)

This is the basic human need to live.

Not sure about the price of nasi lemak because I rarely eat it sweat.gif

I'm only familiar with the E-mart at Batu Kawa because of the bowling alleys. Other than that, yes, this is an accurate description of Kuching: Chill and laid back place but doesn't have that many places for entertainment. Good place to stay once you've retired.

Lower cost of living, because u are likely to drive shorter distance, save petrol.
Or u can avoid city/ town area, go to very ulu places, only some grocery shops, so u have no place to spend money.

U live there? The way u comment seems total opposite that what I heard.

I heard kk is quite advance, like penang Johor. Kk very big like JB. Night Entertainment a lot, many Hong Kong people come visit. So, alcohol and clubs a lot.

Food especially seafood is cheap. About rm500-600 for lobster. Rent is cheap too, rm1000-2000 per month for condo. Pilaks wise, I heard. They are actually Malaysians right?

Depends on which district you're thinking of staying. Best food and value for money would be Sibu. Avoid oil town like Miri or Bintulu.

Dun need talk so much.
East Malaysia is like a republic. No visa no stay. Unless you marry local.
I once heard of a guy working in Bintulu 20yrs. The day he retired he had 3 months tourist visa to leave sarawak.

Quality, choice of food, entertainment, better mall---> kk
Security, cheaper cost of living, cleaner town---> kuching

Dun bother with other towns, you'll be bored till your mother doesnt recognize you.
My choice would be kk.

it's very hard to find anything below RM10 here in sabah

Offshore workers has a higher rate of divorce and most of the time you spend 2/3 of the year away from family.

Safety workers are responsible for the life of hundreds if not thousands of staffs u fuck up once u think other company will take u in?

What did you heard?
To be honest, it's a big town only not city level and you can count the amount of shopping mall here without using all your finger.
Sure got alot of Mainlanders coming here for vacation but that was before covid, clubs are mostly private or out of the town, city partying is just meh with the bar here but it's cool if you want a relaxing drink. I rather buy a few cans and sit near the likas beach or enjoy at bukit bendera there. after that touge and go home.
Unless you're staying at resorts that has night activity the town/city itself is dead after 9pm.. other than 24hrs shop good luck finding other activity than getting mugged.
Seafood not that cheap also but at least cheaper abit than KL la since the sea is just next to the city. Condo? I'll say fancy apartment got la at that price range.. it's small but if you bachelor is good enough.
Pilaks are what we call those alien immigrant, the bad one.. some of them got IC but I doubt the authenticity, even if got legit chip I doubt it's by legal means they get it.

I don't mean to talk shit about my hometown but there's really not much to do here in KK, I'm too old for getting wild ride already.

30km away is a big no, even less than 20km away u have to face almost 2 hour traffic jam unless u use motobike to work. Maybe surfing mudah can give u a rough idea of rental at kuching

Kuching is very cheap to live in, but property prices have been increasing quite a bit. Kolo mee is the benchmark but laksa can be double in price.

Also, remember that Borneo is an island so everything that is not local is more expensive than KL, as you'll need to cover the shopping costs etc. Same for flights to anywhere, you normally need to add KCH-KL leg and the time.

A non Sarawakian would need a permit, pass, or visa to stay long term... even if you marry a local. The bright side is, if you marry a Sarawakian bumi, your children will be bumi.

Sabah is actually politicized by Bumis for controlling the parliamentary seats that's the only reason why they keep concentrating development there.
In terms of resources and wealth don't underestimate Sarawakians. Lots of rich Chinese families from there who owns estates and commodities due to the vast natural resources there.

Depends on whether you're Chinese or Bumi or not. Pork seems to be no issue in Kuching just like Penang, it's a Chinese community stronghold. If you're Bumi, KK will be better choice for you. Lots of illegal Filipinos there though and also higher crime rates.

Property prices still no where at Penang and Klang Valley areas. Too many unsold condominium units because got lots of land, if not wrong Kuching city land area is the largest among all major Malaysian cities. People prefer to live in landed.

The climate and air in Kuching is quite nice compared to many Malaysian cities. Clean and not too hot where it is located at the southern end of Sarawak state.

Closer to Indonesia's upcoming new capital city Nusantara too thumbsup.gif

Are you generalizing KK with Sabah? AFAIK smaller cities like Sandakan and Tawau is still quite cheap though. Seafoods are pretty much 3 times cheaper than KL. You can get Grouper for less than Rm50 a Kg easily.

Yes the living expenses here are cheap.
Rented a couple of rooms here and there before. Had a middle room that's rm550 inclusive of electric and water bills.
Rented another small room in another city with no aircon RM300.

Food expense = RM700 max
Eat out = rm500
Entertainment = rm200

Like sure the expenses here are like dirt cheap. But don't forget the salaries are soviet rates too unless you are working in banks or some bigger companies. You may have to come back and work Saturdays too.

No unless you work for the MNCs like O&G in Miri.
Miri FYI is not cheap though because of its close proximity to Brunei which has high buying power and crossover.

If you work for local companies, the pay rate is just like most other 2nd tier cities in West Malaysia like Ipoh, Seremban or Kuantan. Very low rates because of cheaper standard of living here.

Keyword is offshore. RM10k you work offshore where are you gonna spend it on?

But yeah like the other guy was saying if you don't work in big companies here your salary will be soviet rates. Moved back to SWK my salary was rm1500 to rm2000 range. No kidding even after having 3yrs work exp at that point of time.

The only companies that pay beyond rm3000? Banks, MNCs, etc.

Went for quite a number of interviews with non-bank and non-MNCs in the last 4 to 6mths. The salaries they all offered rm1200 to rm1600. Even if you have 10yrs exp. That's the reality of job offers here.

her business profit is better in Sibu even revenue is not as high as KL.

Quality of life, which city better? Which city is more 'global'?

i prefer kk. more things to do. islands, mountains, imago mall like a mini midvalley, direct flight for holiday to japang, korea, definitely better food (some cant even find in kl)
But....
a bit more expensive than kch. if you're used to kl then its not shocking.
a bit less safe. I remember walking into centrepoint a few years back and feeling like i could get robbed at every corner (although nothing happened). fights in centrepoint is not unheard of. some kampung air areas even polis dun go in. its fine if you avoid a few places.
And....
everything moves at a snails pace. line up in Giant also dem slow compared to kl.
But generally ppl are friendly.

global? bro, i drove around at night in kk and wondered why its so dark, not like in kl you can a lot of times drive without lights. Just a stark contrast that i noticed.
i'd say kk is closer to malacca than to penang.
when i first went there to work in the 90s we took a drive in town on the first day. after 15mins, huh? thats it?
now of course its bigger but i believe subang+usj is bigger than kk.

You wanna move anywhere, better visit one or 2 weeks and look see first.

how long can oil and timber last? petronas says in. 2019 only last 10 years. Assuming a more conservative estimate i give 15-20 years. Probably retiring there is ok but state govt probably is cash-strapped to run public services , infrastructure and road maintenance

a bit more expensive than kch. if you're used to kl then its not shocking.
a bit less safe.

Kuching (Cat) City got VivaCity Megamall, The Boulevard, The Spring, AEON Kuching Central, and Plaza Merdeka. All huge mall complexes that can rival malls in major cities.

how long can oil and timber last? petronas says in. 2019 only last 10 years. Assuming a more conservative estimate i give 15-20 years. Probably retiring there is ok but state govt probably is cash-strapped to run public services , infrastructure and road maintenance

Kuching is like Penang where the Chinese community still hold majority of its economic strength. Most of the supermarkets and shops you go to many signs in Chinese where many of its population attended SJKC.
These are the last remaining stronghold of Chinese populated cities in Malaysia.

You do realized all these are secondary domestic business activities spurred by primary industry of oil and gas. Penang has MNCs doing assembly manufacturing. You need hard currency earnings to pay for import of essential goods and services.

Why? We are all Malaysians. What permit? Same country.

They don't teach real history in school. Malaysia is a Federation composing of 3 separate area/nation. Formed under the Malaysia Agreement 1963. Malaya (composing of 11 states) has been in existence since 1957. Sabah and Sarawak got their independence in 1963. All 3 independent area/nation came together to form Malaysia in 1963.

That's why SS has their own immigration control (that's why they kick Malayan racists out of their territory), have their own cabinet ministers etc. That's why you Malayan need work permit to work there. Same like you need work permit to work in other countries.

The cost of lottery tickets is 10% higher in Sarawak and 15% higher in Sabah due to state sales taxes.

and whatever the same food sold in KL, u add a few more RM...that's the price in sabah

it's very hard to find anything below RM10 here in sabah
and it's certainly harder to find promo compared to KL where promos are everywhere

The climate and air in Kuching is quite nice compared to many Malaysian cities. Clean and not too hot where it is located at the southern end of Sarawak state.

Closer to Indonesia's upcoming new capital city Nusantara too

I tot haze is a yearly problem in Sarawak due to burning in Kalimantan. Is it very often? Does Sarawak has nice coastal towns with beautiful beaches n cheap seafood?

Kuching is very cheap to live in, but property prices have been increasing quite a bit. Kolo mee is the benchmark but laksa can be double in price.

Also, remember that Borneo is an island so everything that is not local is more expensive than KL, as you'll need to cover the shopping costs etc. Same for flights to anywhere, you normally need to add KCH-KL leg and the time.

A non Sarawakian would need a permit, pass, or visa to stay long term... even if you marry a local. The bright side is, if you marry a Sarawakian bumi, your children will be bumi.

I heard Sarawakian Chinese should be considered as bumi n they r fighting for that rights? The nons in WM should be encouraged to marry Sarawakian Bumi to reduce racial disharmony in this country especially WM which is fested with............ By doing so all will be bumi.

Those 60-year-lease condos are extremely expensive by WM's standard. They're more expensive than a similarly sized FH condo in Penang or even KV.

And old houses in areas like BDC or Tabuan can be more expensive than a house in Subang Jaya.

All waiting to rot. You go Penang and KV nowadays. Most of the newly built condos all less than 50% occupied. Empty one especially the luxury and high end ones.

When you move in most likely you're the only one living on the floor. Scary.

Dunno how these developers still surviving.

Currently residing in Sarawak...moved back from KL some years back.
Yes the living expenses here are cheap.
Rented a couple of rooms here and there before. Had a middle room that's rm550 inclusive of electric and water bills.
Rented another small room in another city with no aircon RM300.

Food expense = RM700 max
Eat out = rm500
Entertainment = rm200

Like sure the expenses here are like dirt cheap. But don't forget the salaries are soviet rates too unless you are working in banks or some bigger companies. You may have to come back and work Saturdays too.
*
Or gomen jobs where you earn the same rate nationwide.

KK is a city for tourism for sure. It has everything- nice beaches, highest mountain, etc. But, it is relatively poor than Kuching in terms of socio-economy, jobs, and safety.

Kuching is a bit boring but when it is very laid back and has plenty of good jobs. A bit advanced than KK (in general). I can easily earn rm6-10k working here but I'm not sure if I can get the same salary if working in KK.

Many of my foreigners bosses and colleagues are still living in Kuching for more than 15 years and never look back.

In conclusion, for a better life, Kuching wins hands down but for fun activities for sure KK, no doubt.

I want to live in a city which is more developed commercially and more high class people to mingle.

I don't like to live in a city with many poor people. So which one should I choose?
