there are too much fake oil out there,even bengkel using it.
my way to avoid fake were using lesser known brand like aisin or pennzoil

If really is API SL , alot of modern cars especially those with direct injection engine cannot use already. Refer to your car user manual before you buy. I myself buy at least API SM .

A lot of users here still using ancient 5-40 thick goo oil. Like everything else in malaysia many are stuck in the 90s mindset. If your car was designed for thin oil use the thin oil.

If u think Giant , Lotus , Aeon sell u fake oil thn u better dont buy any thing from branded hypermarket . From ur assumption , thy can sell u fake groceries too.

Not they want to sell fake goods, it’s their supplier that supplies to them, which might be in question.
They just buy and sell,

But if they dare sell fake goods , you can sue the pants off them , reputation down the drain . It is their responsibility to ensure things they sell are not counterfeit. No excuse.

Curious to know why you all say HX7 is so bad? It has API SN+ and A3/B4 rating.

Go read owners manual, it should indicate the grade & viscosity required.

but thats okay you can always *repair* the engine so that it could use that suggested oil viscosity do remember that manufacturer only give warranty for up to 5 years, what happened after 5 years is no longer their problem.

Ya I remember that is the reason stopping me from buying Giant HX8, so I took Helix Ultra. For me I will take API SM or newer grade...

there is this thing called accelerated testing load. believe or don't, but they detail all the methodology, it is likely much more strenous than your average driving load for 20 years of mileage.
at 12:00, they simulate cold start stop wear on camshaft valve surface 24000 times



Also, there are plenty of Jap engines with more than 20 years and half million km with oils based on what would be considered 'thin' viscosity by the dinosaurs of 40 years ago (10-30W used to be considerd thin by those 20-50W guys). I am confident the same will be said in 20 years time (actually 0-20W has been in the market almost 10 years already, Idemitsu introduced it USA in 2010).

and yet engine still leaks oil.
like it or not rubber/silicon can still harden over time which contributes to holes and crack.

my father car also one of the case, 2 years already leak oil eventhough using 5w-30 oil. if use 0w-16 i guess the chance for it to happen to happen even larger. but yeah2, technology advanced over time, someone might already inventing silicon that can stands large temperature over long period of time and not affected by moisture.

my car 5 years old running 0-20w oil from day 1. no leaks.

if engine leak oil because of silicon/rubber issues whatever viscosity oil also will go thru. I'm guessing you are talking about valve covers as these are the most common for oil leaks due to this issue.

People normally concern about thin viscosity oil is on the main bearing journals, those are metal to metal surface riding on a very very thin film of oil.

Also there’s a belief that as engines wear out the piston bore clearance becomes larger, and that thicker oils will leak thru less into the combustion chamber.

5 years is too short to judge brah.
my car only start leaking after 18 years, change from 5w30/10w30 to 10w40 baru okay but still got abit leak.

go ask pomen they said not recommended to change head gasket (valve cover gasket is not a concern, can easily replaced), unless got major issue(e.g engine overheat) or engine stop working. most people that not driving like mad man don't really care about metal to metal contact, as long it got lubricant(e.g decent oil level) okay already. its true that lighter oil is abit lighter when pressing throttle, but after using for some time, i am not bothered with the performance reduction at all.

i think rule of thumb if your engine don't noticed any issue, keep using those thin oil, only care if leak problem happen.

how the pomen confirm is head gasket? can see oil leaking out between the block and head? if oil leaking into the coolant that is bad enough d. (there is actually a tool to confirm head gasket leak, see video link) I dont think your head gasket issue caused by oil viscosity, FYI, head gasket now all are made from MLS (multi layer steel), no rubber or silicon inside.

main reason the manufacturers want to switch to thinner oil is the fuel efficiency gain.

Bought once and tried on my city TMO very good, smooth engine and fuel saving

I did purchased and use on my Toyota.
At first it was fine, then after 3000k+ I can feel the car begin to sluggish pick up and fuel consumption drop by 15%. Nothing wrong with temperature, still normal. From that experience alone I know the quality is not there for that price rm99 from Tesco back then.
Now I purchased from petronas or shell store even though the price slight higher, but the car improved overall in fuel consumption n pick up power.

The cheapest I can find in hypermarkets is from Giant, Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 @ RM 107.

If scared counterfeit , just buy from petrol station.
Cost a little bit more, but get peace of mind, and that feeling is priceless !

Quick necro , I've going to Bandar Kinrara, Sg Wang, and Kelana Jaya Giant store. Couldnt find any Shell engine oil, may I know which Giant got?
