So I just bought a Acer Helios 300 with i5 10500h & RTX3060. Out if the box the temp is quite bad for me(ex desktop user, first time using gaming laptop)
60 idle 99° on full load.

What I did
Replace stock thermal paste with Thermal grizzly kryonaut extreme- temp drop -9 average.
Undervolt and limit the max cpu performance in batt settings then get to 41 on idle.
But the cpu is still thermal throttling on full load. Some stuttering during gaming in cpu intensive game. Bought an IETS gt300 laptop cooler and the stuttering during gaming reduced but it is still there and thermal throttling still happening ( checked in hwinfo)

Coming from dekstop this never happened 🤣

Any other way I can help improve the temp

Thanks

Try reformat the Windows, might be some Acer's drivers or bundled apps might cause the CPU to load heavily thus throttling it.

After reinstall, do install each drivers at a single time & do a restart for each drivers. Test it again before continuing to install the next drivers.

Repeat the same steps until you find which drivers or apps that is causing the issue.

Also you might to want to try nVidia's generic drivers instead of using Acer's own drivers.

Suggest buying "Honeywell PTM7950"
It's the god thermal pad/paste for gaming laptops right now, Lenovo uses it on some of it's legion models, can go research

Nah too much work brah. And I dont think the issue here is with any background process causing heavy load. On idle it uses <10% cpu with some some spike here and there but never exceed 10%. my concern is thermal thermal throttling on full load which is quite common I think in gaming laptop after some reading. It just that I'd like to minimise it if possible.

Thanks for the suggestion bro. whew can I find this thermal paste actually? seems like cant find it locally. And its like thermal pad right from the image that I see. Want to buy and try to find which is the best since currently I have Kingpin Kpx in que for testing

The kryonaut extreme is definitely no good in laptop. It seeps out after close to a month of use. I noticed a temp spike on third week of use and yesterday I take apart everything to try new thermal paste. The kryonout seems to be runny and like melt on the side with the paste barely on the die. It was quite thick when I applied it.

Bought Iceberg thermal Fuzeice Plus since found in reddit that it has good consistency in laptop and 13w/Mk of thermal conductivity. 1 day of use the idle temp is not as good as the kryonaut but the max peak has dropped by 3 degree and the thermal throttling frequency is reduced too. On max fan speed no thermal throttling happen. However since this is only the first day do cant say anything yet as the kryonout is excellent on the first few days but degrade after

if you search only for "Honeywell 7950" you can find some listings on lazada on shopee
And yes it's a thermal pad but it's actually some cool exotic phase change material that will "melt" into paste once it gets hot and becomes solid again after cooling down (preventing pump out)
there is a normally paste variant but don't get it because apparently it has a long cure time so the pad variant is better for this usage.

Thanks already found and ordered it. Almost ordered the paste but all the reddit and YouTube video are using the pad so manage to find it when I take out the PTM word. Some reddit post show promising results so hopefully it will do well. Issues with laptop thermal paste is how quickly it pump out which is non existence when I was on desktop. I can use any paste and still get a decent long lasting performance out of it.

I would not want to repaste the laptop monthly to achieve good thermal sad.gif

My Honeywell PTM7950 have arrived from China.

Installation was very easy straightforward and no mess. Definitely better than a paste. Just cut to size of die and stick it.

Straight after installation I'm getting a significant temp drop for cpu. Previously max CPU temp is 98°c and a lot of thermal throttling on Aida64 and also during gaming. This is despite undervolting everything including the GPU and fan at max speed plus IETS gt300 laptop cooler at full speed.

After PTM the cpu temp is at 87°C max after 30 minutes on Aida64 and no thermal throttling at all. GPU temp is not much difference. This is a definitely damn good results.

Previously best temp I got on kryonaut extreme is 90°C but it degrade quickly after due to pump out effect.

I'll continue observing and hopefully this will be the last paste/pad I will need

1 week on the paste the temp has risen a bit as compared to fresh application. As high as 96°c on Aida64 stress test and 92 during gaming. Average is at 80+°c. However good thing about this paste vs others is that there are no thermal throttling at all even on Aida64 stress test. The rest will have even after fresh application.

Will update again after it past one month

My 10300H Helios 300 paired with 2060 max temp went 96c while playing Serious Sam 4, tried repaste with Kyronaut not helping much too, but the Kyronaut did help on my previos laptop which hit 98c as well and went down to 76c max, but that wasn't a gaming laptop with i5 8250 + mx150

Interesting to find this Thermal pad from Honeywell doing better than Grizzly Kyronaut

Keep up the update

Thermal conductivity wise this pad is inferior to kryonaut (8.5 vs 13) however due to laptop operating temp that is much higher vs desktop so it couldn't perform as good as it should have. In laptop it will cause pump out effect that will degrade the performance of the paste.

I've used kryonaut and noctua nt h2 in my desktop and they perform damn well however on laptop not very good.

Is it difficult to DIY? Anything we need to beware of other than disconnecting the battery.

The last time I change thermal paste were sending to Acer Service Center to request for the change.

Its not that hard actually. What I did is;
1. Heat the laptop up a bit with Aida to make sure the old paste soften( if u haven't changed it for a while.)
2. Disconnect the Battery, discharge the laptop power completely by turning it on while battery is disconnected.
3. Disconnect the fans & the 2 wifi card cable.
4. Unscrew the heatsink following the number sequence.
5. Gently lift it up to minimise damage on the pink paste for the vrm
6. Clean the old paste and apply the new pad.
7. Backtrack all the previous step

You can actually find a video guide in youtube by an Indian guy. I just watch the video 1st to atleast get what to expect to remove the heatsink.

Definitely one of the best paste for high performance laptop. 2 weeks of using it the temp still maintain with average in the 80's during gaming with no thermal throttling. This is with auto fans setting not at full speed and ambient temperature of hot Malaysia without air-conditioner turned on. Definitely a good investment.

Bought a cheap deepcool 200mm fans laptop cooler, nope doesn't help reduce the temp at all

Bought an IETS 300 laptop cooler around 5- degree drop in temperature. But u have to really do something about the intake vent for the cooler. By default it actually cause no decrease in temp and sometimes even increase in temp. A design flaw where the intake vent is right under most gaming laptop exhaust vent, so instead of sucking in cool air it will suck in hot air instead. The card included does little to help. I create a intake box from a cardboard to counter this issue and only after that I can see a significant temp drop

Agree with this analysis, Thus I get those elevated Coolerpad like CoolerMaster Ergostand lite where I can elevate the laptop to better height and the hot air get pushed out angled upwards instead of getting suck back to bottom especially if you have a wall behind your laptop which bounce back the hot air back to the coolerpad.

But that still doesn't really help much to cool the laptop till it doesn't throttling.

Those cooler in my opinion is as good as elevating the laptop manually with just anything to crate a gap for the fan intake to draw cool air, like the one I bought as it doesnt improve anything vs I elevate my laptop.

Even with the IETS gt300 proper cool air intake the throttling still happen, this happen even with with undervolting of CPU & GPU with TS & afterburner. The only thing that is dropped is idle temp and and the duration& frequency of it throttling.

Only by changing my paste did I solve my problem. currently past 1 month the max temp raised a bit compared to fresh application but still no thermal throttling during gaming.

Grizzly doesn't do really well in laptop. I was using it before swapped to fuzeice and then Honeywell. Both sucks jn laptop thermal. Grizzly paste seems to pumps out after 2 weeks of use as that was the time where the thermal start to degrade badly.

I'll try and open the heatsink tomorrow and see how it fares after 1 month of use

Kinda agree with this. Quite shock Helios temp pump to 100C even after using Grizzly. Tried undervolt it and it maintain to 80-88C range. I still waiting for ETS300 cooler pad to know how it perform

Laptop tend to run at high temp vs desktop due to cooling limitation. Try honewell pad bro, u wont regret it. My current temp is 84 max with max fan speed+gt300 cooler and ambient temp of 33 playing farcry 6. Damn hot now the weather.

Doesn't really work. Had that before. Re-paste and get a normal cooler pad. Simple and effective.
