Unker out of touch with laptops model now.

Budget RM4K.

I think preferably want long lasting battery. But those lighter laptops usually smaller screen a bit, can't have cake and eat it too.

Also nowadays laptops all jalat like phones cannot open change battery and add RAM etc...all sealed...kanasai.

I like HP and Lenovo brand.

Requirements:
1. 6/12 cores/threads minimum, preferably 8/16
2. 8GB RAM minimum
3. 512GB NVME
4. Light

GPU important for Engineering student? hmm.gif What they use? AutoCAD? Unker not Engineer.

Unless you intend to buy the software (perhaps through some student incentive), usually the uni would already have the computer facilities for students use so having 3D intensive laptop is kinda pointless.......unless ahem.

Or maybe Im just old, is it nowadays every engineering students given free software for their studies?
*
Yeah wor, i am also thinking the same. Maybe i will ask the student councillor for advice before buying anything.

Maybe laptop just use for basic stuff while the hardcore rendering all done at lab.

RAM and Graphics i understand but CPU so jialat ?

basically you need gaming PC already

not sure if Macbook Air M1 can handle GPU requirement or not but M1 processor quite good, surpass most of the laptop CPU out there

From what I know , Autocad is free for education, renewable every 3 years. Matlab is priced at campus license . So the student has to register at mathworks with their student email address with their institution domain to get free license.

Nowadays bcoz of covid , classes are online now. Ppl dont go campus. You kinda need your own machine to work on.
*
Nice info. Thanks

But i understand some unis/college do have on site classes, hybrid for now. Maybe certain classes teach online.

Really jalat, pay yahoodee price, learn online. sad.gif

Hmmmmmm......then my advice.....get a desktop. Not like you going to bring ur laptop to starbucks and do 3D hahahahahaha,,,,,,,,,wait do they?

Laptop with 3D graphics is quite pricey and doesnt really last very long (milage vary but personally laptop devices tend to break on me after just 2 years). Also, this covid thing seems like is going to be over soon IMO.

Again up to TS. I dont really know how TS's uni going to handle this anyway.
*
But maybe 1 year down the road, KJ declare sudah menang, then all go back to campus....i think laptop is safer bet.

Yeah, i think i need to ask uni first before blindly buy a laptop. If really don't need all the horsepower, just get the lightest laptop possible for office and presentation stuff.

And yeah, students today probably go to Starbucks with their laptop....

alright then, maybe Illegear, a few years ago i might recommend Lenovo because price quite competitive, especially legion series but after graduation, i didnt chase pc specs that much, not sure whats the case now.
*
Gila meh. Illegear is legendary bad service. Unker don't want high blood pressure deal with their customer service.

That is not for student level la. Anyways , Quadro is the same silicon as GeForce , just with drivers that are certified by the industry CAD software makers. Maybe more VRAM , and thts it.
Autocad works perfectly fine with GeForce or Radeon , the requirement is only DirectX support.
Many years ago , ppl need Quadro because CAD software demand OpenGL drivers which GeForce suck at. Now no more.
*
From what I know people bought Quadro last time in US is because of the great support for Quadro which Nvidia guarantees a replacement within certain period. Does not applies elsewhere, so no point buying Quadro GPU if not in the US.

For all-in efficiency purposes, I would recommend a M1 based Macbook Pro, but it will be >4k budget

If you can wait a few weeks, go for a brand name 12th Gen Intel i7 with 16GB RAM

If can't wait, then 11th Gen i7 with 16GB will also do fine

Wont buy anything Apple

Acer's design and materials has actually improved quite a lot, you can give them some chance.  thumbsup.gif

Their laptops like Nitro and Predator series are great for engineering student. They're pretty good for CAD software and other minimum requirements.
