For engineering, a good processor is important. Graphic card is optional. With that modest budget, I would look for Lenovo Thinkpad series, maybe E or L series. Getting a T series would be better but since last year, prices of lenovo laptops have been rising.

Yeah, was browsing Lenovo website last night until fall asleep Liao.

One criteria I am looking at is lightweight model around 1.3kg model. No point having a 2.xx kg beast + adapter to lug around. Charger if use USB PD can also work with phone? Then less chargers to lug around!

I dunno mang. Not versed in nitro.
A lot of laptops now come soldered. Non removable battery, no removable flaps for parts upgrade. Just to make it as thin as light as possible.

Thin = flimsy. Most of it anyway.
*
Any recommended models for light and thin with 16GB RAM? I found a few but most are 8GB RAM only.

the 6000 series going to be delayed with inflated prices, better to stick to r7 5800u if you're buying soon

here's something i'd go for, decent brand name for a workhorse, customisable, meets your budget

Thanks man.

How come i don't see the link to customize laptops at lenovo. Click click here and there also cannot get to the link above.

The specs and weight seems fine. It says 1.64kg, although i am hoping for 1.3kg.

Anyway, i notice it says "Out of Stock" for the E14-Gen 3 model at the product page.

Didnt you say your budget was below 4K?
Its good, but this one has no room to upgrade your RAM. It also has very small battery capacity. I would agree with h@ksam suggestion though. Very good value. Only drawback is the 5 weeks delivery period.
Playing with the specs, I can say this is a really good model. Can even upgrade the warranty and still be below 4k.

funnyTONE Just read your post, yeah, this is good config. But I probably won't buy all those extra insurance. Seems like waste of money. I think the only part that always die first is battery. Ori Battery probably RM300+?

Now I just need to check more on the weight. If it's around 1.6kg acceptable lah, given the better specs compares to lightweight 1.3kg models.

You said earlier 5 weeks delivery, is it due to out of stock status? :Hmmm:

But I think acceptable lah, my kid just starting his orientation this week and real class only next week. Can use Samseng A7 tablet or old laptop if needed for time being.

Wonder is it advisable to use the laptop without battery when at home so that can prolong the lifespan?

RM 5.3k seems good. But what is the weight?

Just now went to Harvey Norman.

This caught my eye.

Seems gooding, specs all passed and weight and size perfect. No need big screen. Already got an ultrawide monitor to use at home. Portability is No 1 concern.

Btw, i check this 5800U and 5800H. It seems the same, what is the difference? I can also find that 5800H use more power and 5800U is for ultra thin laptop.

I think you should check out the new Dell Inspiron with AMD chips. They have 16:10 screen and upgradable RAM (unlike Vivobook with soldered RAM). Battery size is quite big also.

But Dell Inspiron quality really jalat one wor....last time my opis has tons of Inspiron. Jalat laptops.

How about HP Pavilion Aero Laptop 13-be0029AU?

It has very high resolution screen, 100% sRGB. Weight less than 1kg.

Only down side is Ram 8GB only.

Yeah, saw this just now, RAM 8GB, maybe not.

Used to buy Dell stuff, but their plastic quality like shit.
So brittle. Thats why they can afford 1-1 replacement most of the time. I moved to Lenovo after that.
*
The lenovo website really confusing...there are many product with the same model name

https://www.lenovo.com/my/en/laptops/thinkp...MD/p/20Y70030MY

This one also E14 Gen 3, but not customizable and has 5700U. Can't add battery, but otherwise the rest of the specs are ok. RAM a bit werd...8GB soldered + 8GB Sodimm??? Naniiii!!!!

I surf until wanna pengsan liao.

But this one delivery within 3-6 days. I think 6-8 weeks too much liao for the customization. Maybe i take this.

Side note the Thinkpad X13/X14 Gen 2 also almost similar specs. Other than CPU variation and screen size. Am thinking about the X13 as well.

https://www.lenovo.com/my/en/laptops/thinkp...G2/p/20XH0036MY

It has better battery and 3 yrs onsite.

My Dell Latitude broke its hinges first. Upon dissasembly, I notice the old dvd drive was loose and soft, as if it was made of aluminium and cardboard. The same with the rest of the body, very cheap plastic. I mean sure that made the entire laptop feels very light, but that means all the locking bits and where plastic meets metal break easily. But I do love how easy every components are easy to replace and gain access to. Having Dell's accidental damage cover really puts you mind at peace.
I'd probably categorize Lenovo sites as 2 main categories.
The normal, customizable version.
The fast delivery, offer bin.

If you're looking for cheap deals, then just check out the READY TO DELIVERY. I normally camp there for specific models which will come every fortnight. Mind you the delivery may still take around 8-14 days because its usually shipped from Hong Kong or China.

But if want souped up builds, then look for the normal customize options. For those, the deals comes in the form of add-on e.g. upgrade to 16gb RAM for $70. I suppose, this is why you feel everything kinda overwhelming since you're still fairly new to the site.

Worst part is how its not friendly on mobile. Truly sucky experience when you're waiting so long for the pages to refresh.

Lastly, once you've committed to an item you like, put it in the cart and try to chat with lenovo agent. They will check your cart and see if there are some things they could offer you, usually in the form of discount vouchers or free gifts. ALWAYS ASK FOR FREE GIFTS. But if you compare it with any existing codes like DOORBUSTER and find that its cheaper, then just ignore it.

Shopback is where I would definitely make sure is tracked because who wouldn't love a rebate am I right?
*
I found a better code yesterday. DEALSDAY. Give more discount. I am also using my son's student verification ID to get another 5% discount (which I did on PC). Tried to do the same for Shopback but i can't do the student verification again. Crap. Also notice Shopback has some T&C about tracking certain codes. Might not be applicable if I stack difference discount. I think the DEALSDAY + student discount is very good Liao. Later today check whether still in cart or codes expired or not. On the edge of buying. Just that I don't really like the Lenovo Thinkpad design...black and square...very business like....would it look odd for College students? Lol.

Yes, you are right Lenovo's website reallt overwhelming. Too many options. But I am surprised.thqt even DELL is not as customizable. I thought DELL should be more customizable.

Ohhh.... a new code!
Thanks for the discovery, I'll definitely adding that to my list.
Ohh.... I didn't know you can stack student's discount with another code. I should try that in the future.

Fyi, Thinkpad was an IBM series back in the 80s. So they definitely went with the business design on that one, especially the red nipple.

Yes, I know. Last time I used an IBM Thinkpad in Opis for a number of years. So I am familiar with molesting the red nipple...brows.gif. But for me the design is very "Lou tou" , old fashioned. My son doesn't seems to mind though. I also have 2 other Lenovo laptops in the house, quite old, more than 5 years for sure. Both working fine except the battery no good as it has been replaced with OEM battery which last a couple of month and now they practically needs to be plug in to use. No intention paying for expensive ori batteries for old lappies...also probably no stock anyway.

It's common to have soldered ram on today's notebook. You normally get 1 extra slot where you can addon the ram. Therefore, it's always 1 soldered + 1 not-soldered. I do hate soldered though.
*
If you handy enough, go home desolder it. Lol. Maybe next time they make even smaller RAM like a super mini USB card. Just swap like an microSD card.

Its not just the classic design.
Materials used for Thinkpad is a mix of magnesium, carbon fibre and plastic which makes it flexible yet very durable. I don't get to see these type of rubbery touch on the surface on other laptops. And I simply love typing on a Lenovo keyboard. So bloody satisfying.

Yeah, unfortunately most batteries never last long. You'd be lucky to get it to work longer than 6 months.
*
Bro..done liao made payment.

I have saved the deal in my account last night, today login, still there, so just pay.

I used the ShopBack, but not sure if it's tracked....don't see anything in my ShopBack.

Btw, i made a mistake on the code earlier, it's DEALDAY, not DEALSDAY.
