Yes, it works. I am using this method to improve my wifi strength

Without the alumminium foil, my wifi only got 2 bars. With it, it got 4 bars.

I had made mine using a 15" aluminium kuali and the sad thing is: I use it in my campus accomodation and the wifi access point is actually about 150m to 200m away and it is blocked buildings and also walls, although I pointed my dish antenna to the correct direction, it still didnt get any signals.

Material also taking into consideration if you making a dish antenna, for example a steel one may reflect better than an aluminium.

For those who have nothing or few things in between your antenna and the access point, you may happy with your work result.

i'm using toilet rolls cut in halves laden with aluminium foil from the kitchen. boost is slight but it does help since i live in a 3 storey house.

I've tried making a cantenna before, but with bad results due to suboptimal can size and bad craftsmanship. I ended up buying a yagi, which worked heapppps better than the original rubber duck antenna that the wireless bridge came with.

Seriously, just try finding The Right Can in the supermarket.. you'll have a hard time I tell ya

True! And with all the calculations you have to make to find the right 'setting', it would be a nightmare.

Anyway, it would be a good project for those who really like to get their hands really dirty.

How much did you buy the Yagi antenna?

Hey guys.. I didn't know there are people interested in this here.. I had been doing it by myself for pass couple of months and upgrading it.. And then I bumped into this thread.. Lucky me.. Well to tell u the experience.. It works on my Maxis broadband! U know the RM68 package kan? Yup that one..

Hehe.. Previously I bought a small round metal tudung saji (food cover) and covered it with aluminium foil. I then places the antenna through a hole I made in the center and it worked.. I gained such great signal.. I can't say it was boost though.. But I got better signal and speed.. In gombak area.. the maxis broadband line was pretty ****up... so it was not consistence and alway dc all the time.. Later by doin this, it helped me..

After a while.. I had the idea where my fren told me to change the current diy antena reflector.. I just bought a roll of aluminium foil and folded it into a rectangular shape with couples of layers.. Then I placed it standing up behind my broadband modem and direct it towards the tower.. It gained lots of signal and raised my speed. Previously it was low.. My download speed was from the average of 1 to 10 kbps raised until 40-60 kbps... I was overwhelmed..

Try it.. If only my nokia navigator was not stolen last week, i would have put the pictures here.. Sorry for that..

I cincai solder and attach a karaoke mic wire to the PCI wifi card.
From average 36Mbps without the "attachment", I got stable 54Mbps~!

Haha, antenna mods. Luckily for me, I just needed to increase transmit power so that the whole house could get it. Increasing the signal bars sounds fun though.

Strange things work wonder. I used to do this with my television.

i diy my antenna for izzi net which use 1.790-1.795ghz, current in working condition but still need some improvement

How your ensure your DIY antenna is working at that frequency range?
Is there any formula or method to calculate them out for your own design?
How about if I want to design my own antenna for 802.11b and 802.11g?
