Any old laptop will do because Linux system resources much lower than Windows 10.

I'm currently experimenting with Mint on an old ThinkPad X200s with Celeron M 723 processor.

If there is a chance to get a new laptop that runs good with Ubuntu. Which one will you recommend?

Look for Ubuntu certified hardware:

Popular brands of Linux-based laptops have poor support locally. You may be able to buy a unit from say System 76, but if you have any issues you're screwed.

Dell is a decent choice, but make sure that you look up reviews beforehand as many of these laptops have either Bluetooth/WiFi chips that don't play nice with Linux. Onboard/discrete graphics switching (Optimus) may also have issues with the low-power mode not being properly supported.

WRT to your requirement on running DL, I would recommend you scrap the idea of running models on your laptop and push the compute to a server/cloud. The additional performance benefits of being able to run things locally is heavily outweighed by the cost.

U can check the Ubuntu certified hardware link above.

Unfortunately, many off shelf laptops sold here comes preloaded with Windows 10 or 11. U can however discuss with the shop to sell the laptop without any storage. U then purchase the SSD and RAM from outside to save cost.

Not to discourage you. But most laptop with dual graphic, that is Intel dGPU and another Nvidea GPU, usually use Nvidea Optimus, and that used to be major problem in Linux generally. You may need to use Nvidea binary.

Some laptop requires specific 'tweak' or additional lines in the GRUB menu to function properly. You can find solution for popular laptops, but not the less popular ones. Prepare a separate USB with live OS to debug if your installation doesn't work at first.

You may want to try Google Cloud for machine learning instead.

https://support.lenovo.com/my/en/solutions/...ersonal-systems for a list of Lenovo laptops that supports Ubuntu. But try to take only Thinkpad sieries.

If you're a public university student, there's a chance of getting student discount, either by your student status itself, or through the university.

Hi. I am interested to buy a laptop which is pre-installed with Ubuntu or is compatible with Ubuntu Operating System. I am looked around some brands like Dell Inspiron and so on. My budget is Rm 3k~4k. The laptop is mainly used for doing  Deep Learning/ server stuff. I expect some medium Graphic card is integrated with it. Mind sifu sheds some light on this matter?

The sad thing is I am no longer a university student. Hence, I don't enjoy the privileges of a student. =(

You can always ask for help from juniors or friends. Most students don't use the discount.
