My place never flooded in 40 years. This time flooded until 1 foot deep into house. Outside knee deep.

What about last year freak storm roof destroyed and tree fell down everywhere? Please advice what I should do for freak storm prone area also.
I think protecting water going into house is not possible, can prolong the time it takes to enter house so have time to get ready but there is no full proof...
So for those area is near to river, need to have backup plan to safe guard important items and expensive items like cars ...
