Actually rm2 is considered very cheap already. At that big size, the cost to frame it may reach rm400 in KL, and it is a bit funny to think the price of the frame is half the price of the artwork - it is like we are showcasing the frame instead of the artwork.

When framing oil paint, there is the plus and negative of it:
- you need to put lining around the painting, without lining the frame looks cheap. Basically we need to put lining around any painting and that means the frame moulding (the kayu) will need to be bigger than the painting size (extra cost)
- luckily oil painting you don't need a glass to protect the painting because we put varnish on the painting, so we save cost here.

Wow! Things have gone up in price.

I am lucky to buy my paintings cheaper in Bali and Phuket almost 20 years ago.

How long have you been training in art? Doesn't look like just started.

More than 5 years ago I took an oil painting class.

But after that I stop painting. Then last year during MCO I start practising again.

Not sure how many lessons, it was not a formal class. I joined it as I wanted to learn the basic. After learning the basics, it was more of chit chatting while painting leisurely. We painted whatever we liked and we let the teacher commented on the paintings.

You can try oil painting without learning acrylic (I don't have experience in acrylic at all), or you can just acrylic. It is up to your preference.

Acrylic gives you the convenience (just need water) and the cost of the materials are cheaper than oil. Also you don't need much skills to start.

Oil is known to produce the colours with more depths with vibrant colours. On the other hand, the materials are more expensive and you need some new basic skills to start.

If just wanna test the water, you can buy student quality paints first, also student quality brushes. Buy the box set (small tubes for each colour). Think of it as spending time for fun.
