Perodua Kenari Move 2002.
Called 2 gearbox shops in Klang. They said to overhaul same price as replace with recon gearbox.
What are the pros and cons?
I was thinking if repair, I'm sure it's my gearbox. But might take longer....
If replace with recon, faster, but...

Can anybody help and old uncle please?

I would be comfortable with overhauling an auto transmission knowing what parts are being replaced, provided the said shop demonstrates its competencies with good track record/referrals.

If u choose to overhaul common gearbox, they will usually swap with u their ready stock overhauled gearbox. This way you and them save more time. So customer dont have to wait and are happy.

That one is just a common recond swap/replace.

Not overhaul/rebuild.

Repair or Recon should be similar

Another option is get gearbox from halfcut shop. If it is cheaper a lot can consider halfcut option, i also change my Kelisa gearbox few years back with halfcut unit, halfcut shop also can offer warranty nowadays.

I will choose to overhaul simply because you don't know how the recon one was done. Overhaul meaning you still have the control on the quality of the gearbox but of course, find the one with good workmanship.

Exactly what I'm thinking... but how do I know if they really overhaul my gearbox or just swap? Because I have to leave my car, I cannot be there for hours. Is there a serial number or something on the gearbox? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Found a gearbox shop in Kapar... good Google reviews. But I still feel like it's tikam lah...

I was also thinking of this, but half-cut usually means they salvage the parts right? That means I could be buying a unit that also could have the same problems as my current gearbox or worse right? It's not like I know how to tell a good or bad gearbox....

Thus i feedback some halfcut shop got provide warranty. If anything happen just return or change with them for another gearbox unit.

What's the problem are you encountering with the transmission now? Mind telling more why you came to conclusion you MUST replace/overhaul it?

Ha!!! GOOOOD Question. I wanted to ask this in the beginning, but was thinking it's 2 separate issues. Now that I think about it, I SHOULD HAVE asked this first yes?

Basically, it's occasional delayed engagement. Sometimes, press accelerator, rpm goes to (sometimes) 2000rpm, then only gear engages. Does not happen all the time. I already changed gear oil and gearbox filter. Foreman says most likely cause is gearbox failing. Am wondering if there could be other issue before I simply change/overhaul gearbox. Also... when is it OBVIOUS that I need to change gearbox?

yes should have asked that first

1) use lubegard platinum or K&W /KW TransX high mileage ATF treatment
2) change another ATF, use back your car model oil, perodua ATF, or Aisin ATF
3) no need change/overhaul gearbox unless you encountering leaking or completely unable to change gear.
