Hi all,

My first time posting on this subforum. Also my first time hunting for watches... my budget is around RM30k, possibly stretch up to RM40k as well..

I'm thinking to get one for my wedding and then to use it occasionally. laugh.gif

Thanks bros!

Your wife not pantang meh? Buy watch for wedding like calling time on your marriage.

Better to buy watch for fun and not to mark your wedding. 30k watch, get a 5 digit 16610ln submariner and call it a day.

The best starter watch is no doubt the Rolex Datejust. My starter watch was the Datejust too and it was my only watch for almost a decade.

It has everything going for it to be an everyday wear watch. A simple calendar aka date function, 100m water resistance and a tough as nails bracelet + clasp.

The Speedmaster is nice but it’s not practical as a first watch due to the manual winding which you need to wind up every morning or at least every other morning. It also only has 50m water resistance and non screw down crown which makes water sports activities a bit difficult.

Cartier is also only 50m water resistance and if you get it on leather strap, you can’t get it wet. On bracelet, it is more prone to scratches due to the many shiny parts.

Nothing beats a Datejust for toughness and practicality. It’s a great starter watch to learn about good mechanical watch habits before you venture into more delicate movements or fine finishing and even ETA quirks like not being able to quick set the date between 9pm and 3am. Rolex movement is bulletproof and as a beginner in my early twenties, I managed to fuck up my DJ twice and even managed to crack the sapphire crystal from falling off my bike. But every single time, a quick visit to Rolex spa made it as good as new.

Here’s my 20 year old Datejust, purchased new when I was 21 years old. I still wear it in rotation up to this day.

Moot points la. My SKX can covers the same but at a lower cost.

Given he's asking for a wedding piece, I doubt he wants a used or grey. So Rolex is out of the question, not to mention the 41 DJs are above the budget.

Cartier is the best for a dressier piece but I don't think it goes well dressed down. And speedy is the other way around.

Also, the 50m is good enough for swimming and normal snorkeling activities. Definitely no diving, but why are you diving with a wedding watch?

Nobody gets a Seiko as a wedding watch bro. Might as well get a proper wedding ring if willing to spend only a few hundred ringgit on a watch.

50m is good for swimming if you take the effort to get the water resistance checked yearly at Swatch Group. For the Datejust, you can easily go years without checking the WR due to better seals and how it is constructed (oyster case and twinlock crown).

It’s a common misconception on watch forums that 50m is good enough for swimming.

Yes, it can take a plunge but only when it’s new. Once the seals age, it will leak. 50m watches have only a single seal on the crown unlike Submariners with their triple seals (triplock) or Datejusts with double seals (twinlock system).

And nobody gets a Rolex period. So no point telling him that lo.

It's like telling you to get Dufour Simplicity at retail. Just walk in to the shop and tell the fella one watch please, here's my Black card.

And plenty of people gets a Seiko as a wedding watch, not everyone can afford to spend 30k on a watch.

He said his budget is 30-40k for a wedding watch. So, I believe a Datejust is around that price, even at the grey market.

Yea, only the non fluted one though. Fluted is above already if I am not wrong.

But given its a special occasion, I would have preferred a boutique / AD experience to go with it. And if can, a couple's piece even better.

This is probably the new normal for watches in general. Restricting supply to make the brand more desirable is the only way forward for antiquated tech like mechanical watches. I foresee more and more established brands pulling a Rolex in the near future.

aiya... get a JLC Reverso monoface then engrave it with your wedding date or whatsoever to celebrate your wedding lo... but once engraved, conlan7firm you can't sell it.. no body gonna pick up an engraved watch.. but since you buy it to celebrate your wedding, you won't be expecting to sell right... Rolex, even the entry level OP needs to wait for who knows how long.. unless you want to go greymarket.. but we ppl dont recommend that.. dont buy anything with inflated price with greymarket.. My suggestion would be JLC and particularly the Master Control 1000hrs. A brilliant watch that has elements of dressy-ness and casual touches. Believe it is also partially handmade with a highly regarded in-house movement.

Am also looking for 30k to 35k watch. Quite set on a Rolex. Looking at submariner or explorerII, but not sure which. Prefer sportier looking model instead of datejust.

No large bezel = not sporty for me lol. Don't know if I'm right.

Do you think got chance to buy at RRP if willing to wait on the list? Or AD also will ask to pay extra?

Mainly submariner. That one seems the obvious choice for me.

I'm split between Explorer II and GMT master for second choice. But leaning towards explorer II for the simpler design and lower price.

I like Daytona design the most but that one out of the question la...

Brilliant choice!
I’d find you an interesting person if i see you wearing a JLC from across the room rather than those individuals wearing those boring Rolex.
In other words, you’re a gentleman with class.

Brilliant choice!
I’d find you an interesting person if i see you wearing a JLC from across the room rather than those individuals wearing those boring Rolex.
In other words, you’re a gentleman with class.

Aside Rolex, which brand can hold good value? Not a flipper as this is my first watch as well. But I would like something that holds its value well.

Or does all brands like Bell n Ross/ tag heuer / jlc / omega all hold value well?

Nope , not even close…

Bell ros tag or jlc can only retain 20%

Omega slightly better at retain 40% -50% only…

Omega if you get 20% discount and hold for 10 years, you might be able to break even laugh.gif

But in saying that, if you have the wrists for it, can’t go wrong with an omega as well I reckon.

the challenge would be to find an Omega rare enough to retain it's value over time smile.gif

I think a fren of mine bought his moon watch less than 10k for many many years ago, I think now changing hands at 15k

inflation aside, wrist time as well, I think its value well retain I guess

as nasigoreng always says don't buy it for the value retain or what, its really pointless
