Yes, even single channel ABS helps somewhat.😊👍🏻
Because during emergency braking situations, the rider often times will press the brake lever to the point of the wheel locking up.
For your dad's advice, yes probably back in those days it might be true. But modern brake calipers are very effective. So in normal dry weather riding, it's better to use 70% front, 30% rear or 60% front, 40% rear combo as the front brake rotors are larger than the rear. Wet weather? 50% / 50%.

Also, having ABS for new models are being made compulsory as our JPJ is following the UNECE regulations. Existing models are given a bit of leeway on this matter which is why some models still are sold without the ABS option although neighbouring countries have them. For example; Yamaha N-Max. It's still being being without ABS although it has been recently face-lifted.
