7 used cars under RM 100k: Great comfort and superbly reliable

2014-17 Hyundai Sonata LF – From RM 51k

2015-19 Nissan Teana L33 – From RM 50k

The L33 is generous too when it comes to equipment with 6 airbags and cruise control available as standard while the top-of-the-range 2.5 XV came with a sunroof, ‘Zero Gravity’ leather seats, and a 9-speaker Bose sound system. Truly a classy car for small-time businessmen.

2014-17 Nissan Sylphy B17 – From RM 39k

2013-15 Lexus ES XV60 – From RM 100k

Step inside the ES and you’re greeted with premium luxury from the smooth leather upholstery to actual wood trims on the dash and the doors. But you’re more likely to feel more like a boss in the back.

2013-18 Mazda Biante – From RM 60k

Mazda isn’t really a brand that comes to mind when you’re thinking about comfort. They’re dubbed the Japanese BMW which is saying a lot. biggrin.gif

2013-19 Subaru Forester SJ – From RM 50k

2016-20 Mitsubishi Outlander – From RM 80k

The Sonata was used a lot as taxis in Sg. More comfortable than Toyota Crown or Wish.
I ask the driver how's the reliability, he said the taxis move 24 hours, so after 3 years the car was 750k km. No issues.

Nissan got GB issue

Well, if maintain well and get good mechanic actually all these ride is very reliable.
No issue with my Subaru Xv for almost 6 years now and i got friends driving Hyundai & Lexus cars for years.
Used car ppl will always scare owners to low bail them, it is their marketing strategy.

If you ask me about Subaru Forester, get the Subaru Forester XT with turbo (fully imported from Japan).
Aftermarket is damn hot and very fast grab up as same engine as WRX.

Not all car models and generation will got problem.
If you go into details only certain year or batch only got problem and usually manufacturers got updated parts or recall to improve their products.
If you own VW, Merc & BMW they got a lot of superseded part or technical part update to improve those weakness, just in Malaysia market not a lot of SC will recall or do it for free.

BTW, diesel engine from continental rides mostly are quite reliable.
My father own e90 320d, i think until today only 1 time check engine light up due to oil pressure sensor failure.
If you do all the preventive maintenance as per BMW recommend usually the car is problem free, a lot of diesel owners feedback can reach over 200~300k without issues with proper maintenance.

Most people, majority, I guess more than 90% Malaysian car buyers would not want diesel car. laugh.gif

Most people also do not want manual transmission car.

If you recommend them diesel they say NO
If you recommend them manual transmission they say NO

Well, my father also at first did not like it. But when step into 1 of it, the difference is totally heaven & earth.
The weakness is the sound or smell of diesel only on the outside, but once inside the interior is quieter and more better fuel economy compare to petrol counterpart. The moment you press down the fuel paddle you will know how much torque from the turbo diesel engine, it is very addictive and modern diesel engine is not like those old timers, people need exposure and test drive to experience it.

The 1 in the previous generation got the XT turbo version which most people is aiming for it in 2nd market as the price did not fare much compare to CKD N/A variant.

If talk about safety features for sure the latest Forester is better, but for more performance value is the previous gen Forester.

The point of the article is on comfort and reliability, not performance and high speed.

The car buyers that the article is targeting does not care about floaty or handling or high speed.

That's true.

That's why reliability is more important that performance.
Conti cars that breaks down and requires tow truck cannot even get from point A to point B.

A reliable car that can always get from point A to point B is dependable / preferable over a superb handling car that might break down at anytime.

That's because you're poor..
Only the poor will think of reliability of conti cars, why? If this car breaks down just call service center to pick up and next day drive the next spare car in your garage.
Even if have 7 cars at home, just call service center to pick up from your house, do the service then send back to your house. No hassle for the rich.
But when you try to be rich, having 1 baseline BMW as your daily driver and that spoils then you complain why this why that.

The rich use cars as a sign of status. Why do you think people spend 500k for one car and have multiple of it?

It shows a sign of abundance like in the olden days where the farmer with 2000 goats and 5000 acres of land is of higher statute than someone who only has 1 goat with no land.

Not really, some are CKD. Like my father's e90 320d is local CKD.
Local CKD is more easier to maintain as most of it already DPF deleted from factory.

Sorry I will give 5 like to 5 MLM self entrepreneurs today so they can upgrade to e class.

Worst one is those that but the cheapest version of the car but make the most noise.

Actually how the build the car is for example
Build perfect specs : VW R version that is tested until it is all perfect

Then to cater for the poor
Remove the expensive Gear box, tramission and etc to cater for the poor then just borrow the name.
This version is just tested a fraction of the time to make it useable for the masses.

That's why R spec Vs the lowest spec is 200k difference.
That's why the low spec one also got problem, but those that buy the lowest spec is the ones that make the most noise.

Ever see a tan Sri complaining his 7series breaking down?
But some fella with 318i BMW from 2014 making the most noise on FB, forum, groupchat, telegram.

My Subaru Xv no issue with the gearbox. If use the correct CVT oil and change it around 30~40k until now over 160k no problem.
Most owner which complain about it when ask how they drive or maintain, most of them just say lanjak only the fuel paddle.
CVT is meant to drive smoothly and main purpose is for fuel economy, if you drive like a sport automatic gearbox without any modification like adding oil cooler or more frequent CVT oil change, the gearbox will fail fast in the wrong foot. Each technology also got its limitation and ways to maintain or prolong also different for different gearbox. if you always like to lanjak the fuel paddle to the max would be better to buy those conventional auto or DSG gearbox.

FYI, BMW spare part are quite abundance and easy to source nowadays compare to some japs.
Their logistic is quite good and nearly every week got spare part shipment from German to Malaysia.
Just ask those spare part shop selling BMW parts (Bavarian Auto, stuttgart etc..) they can tell you everything is possible if you got the money.
Unless your BMW is too old, but until today most e39/e46 parts still accessible.

most people don't know CVT cannot be used for high speed pull
it's for eco driving and up hill driving

want to do high speed pull and highway, engage in anything with actual gear
those will really pull but have bad fuel economy

Yes. Anyone would expect car more then 5 years old will have some sort of tiny rattle going on. But manatau none.

Lexus is good buy in the used market. Only spare part cost is slightly higher, but hearsay some, some parts are same with Toyota.

The one i sat in was a just acquired used car with 80k milage. Feels really solid and smooth.

If you want your cousin to look at you and lansi your aunties just bare with the break downs la.
But it's true when R spec Golf Vs TSI golf, R spec much lesser issue due to the top down approach when building cars.

Build perfect car, test it and make sure that it is perfect,
Knock it down and remove the parts for Asian market
Then test abit and release.

How about Nissan Teana L33?

The 2.5l ones are more reliable, supposedly it comes with a better CVT than the 2.0l versions and more importantly from the factory it was fitted with a heavier duty transmission fluid cooler.

An underrated car that's very comfortable especially to do long distance though fuel consumption a bit high.

QUOTE(New Klang @ Oct 20 2021, 12:23 PM)
The Sonata was used a lot as taxis in Sg. More comfortable than Toyota Crown or Wish.
I ask the driver how's the reliability, he said the taxis move 24 hours, so after 3 years the car was 750k km. No issues.

Nissan got GB issue
*
Interesting isn't it, those that depend on a car say it's a fantastic car and will go the distance while those that don't own one have all the negatives to say about it.

I once spoke to a police patrolman in Beijing that drove one, he did escort as well as some pursuit duties and drove a Sonata.

I was interested in taking a peek inside which he did let me do so, was surprised it was a very barebones car that even the seat is vinyl rather than fabric, only a driver airbag fitted and assembled at a factory within Beijing city limits. He said it was similar to a taxi specification car but what surprised me was the service reminder sticker which showed the next service was 1,120,000km... all that distance in 4 years.

I was like that's crazy, why haven't they given him a new car for his duties, then he told me the policy was any car they procure only after 5 years the car can be replaced and they procure it on condition that it can be driven for however many km in that 5 year period there would be no issues with the engine, transmission and main structure of the car (read : no rust)

Not bad, as now it has been 27 years since they been using Hyundais as police cars.

Good cars, especially in GT trim but the real workhorse in Kia are the Sorentos and Sportage with the diesel engines. Those can really run and very durable vehicles.

Pity for the buyer expecting it to be cheap because of its' reputation for no resale value because those diesel ones hold their values every bit as good as a Toyota or Honda.
