Now I am collecting rainwater for watering plants in a N100 poli tank. Is it possible to change this into safe drinking water? Can use for long term purposes. What do you I need? Is it safe? Minerals?

bro, it's not safe for drinking, it's not treated or fluorinated

i have seen creative use of such water in NZ and japan.

In NZ, they use it for flushing water. and in Japan, tokyo by the way, the toilet is small so they have the washing hand sinkie on top of the toilet flusher. so after you flush, the water will start flowing and you can wash your hand and fill up the tank for the next flush

in northern japan, my customer harvest solar energy - and they pump rain water up the roof of their buildings for potential energy storage..when electricity surge in demand, the water will flow down and rotate a generator - pretty cool

Most tech that purify water in Africa is by condensation , use another water filter to be safe. Saw one design by engineering without borders one just use simen slab to filter muddy water and very safe to drink( this one very low cost and easy to DIY )

Why does it need to be fluorinated? Isn't treating it by removing dissolved chemicals and pathogens enough?

Treat water usualy using chlorine & chlorine dioxide for drinking.

I tried google flourine --> highly toxic

Are you sure fluorinated is the right word?
- What is the root word?
- Is it Fluoride which is use in toothpaste?

Check for acid rain and maybe some dust particles.
You can filter and boil it.

Yes. Heard that it is not safe. Is there a way to process it at home to make it safe? I have an outdoor water filter. 6 layer unit. Was thinking of adding items in between. A Coway like unit? Osmosis is safe right?

Fyi condensation method is safe to drink , just recall what u learn in primary school ( or Google how condensation work ). If u in a country that don't have clean water ( Africa or island country Fiji etc ) then u don't really have a choice but at Mal cost wise better stick with normal pipe water je la.

My place in kelantan, the water company is not reliable. Need to use pump at main pipe. If there is water. If not need to wait for lorry. Those who can afford to boring or land is suitable for boring get their water there. My place boring is not suitable. When you need to stay up every night around midnight to monitor water if enter or must I pull my 40m pipe to the static tank provided to get water between 2-5 am. It becomes tiring. If I was a teenager or early 20s can do this sort of thing. Now near 40. Have to wake up early to go to work.

Was thinking of this setup as emergency when there is no water. After complaint, water pressure ok like 5 days before getting worse again. Then if too bad no water. Now with people balik kg. Kelantan full. And no water some more.

For water to be drinkable, it needs to be clean of
1. Harmful sediment
2. Pathogens (parasites, bacteria, virus)
3. Harmful substances (heavy metal pollutants, chemicals, dissolved salts) - This is a link to the wiki article for heavy metal polluted water in the town of Flint, Michigan, USA

Make safe 1 by filtering, 2 by boiling, (or chemical means like iodine purifier, bleach, etc) but 3 is a problem if you use well/groundwater. You can get rid of all by distilling the water, but this takes a lot of energy to do.

Rain water is easier to convert to drinking water, but there may be a problem if there is a lot of atmospheric pollution, as rain water absorbs these pollutants as it falls. There is also the problem of local pollution like bird poop from the roof or rotted leaves (spores and fungus) being mixed into the rainwater as it is collected.

In short, I would consider rainwater as "grey" and use it only as such. I would attempt to obtain drinking water from alternate water sources only in an emergency or survival situation. If you are still keen to go this route, here is a wiki to a solar still, which you may be able to scale up.

If I were in your situation in Kelantan, I would try to solve it by having multiple storage tanks. But don't say Kelantan... a lot of my friends have multiple storage tanks already in Selangor with all the water cuts happening. Good luck. It absolutely sucks not to have clean water on tap.
