Yeah why not. I would give them the experience and spend as much time as possible with them. I am not going to let them be entitled rich brats.

I believed hard times create strong men. Everyone who been rich and not given inheritance work their butt off and then they appreciate that money doesn't come easy.

So they will be attending gov school for free education, local vacation rather than overseas?

Yar lor,
Since the Dad is very skilled and good in trading option and buying shares and profits from it until can FIRE by 40+ yrs old and had been passing on that skills to the mother before their marriage.
Why not use teach and pass on that skill to the children instead of spending xxxk on overseas education that can no longer offer job security?
Why not use the xxxk as a working capital for investment. The Dad does not hv xk when started investing, yet the Dad can FIRE by 40+.
If Dad gave the children xxxk to start, ......huat + no worry abt job security.

If the Dad can be successful by just reading articles from the website of investing gurus, then imaging the outcome of investing if have one to one guidance and financial support of a guru Dad.

I myself went though public school the whole way, I am not letting my kids go through what I went though. Secondary school especially the maths, science subject the teachers are useless. I can't even understand them. When we asked question look at us blankly or read back from textbook. The best part is the national textbook is super useless Vs some overseas textbook that I happen to have my hands on. They are more understandable Vs national textbook despite being thicker. Nope. No more.
Of course. My kids education will be all free and expenses fully paid for by my investments. Why do your think I am so aggressive with my savings and investing? I don't want any surprises that can detail my plan.

Apert from my experience above and seeing the education ministry doing "national day for some country" nope. Not going to let my kids be indoctrinated by religious/political belief. Even my parents said don't bother with public school. They are way gone from their reliable days of 1970s time. One of extended family working in public school told me don't send your kids to public school. So if you have boots on the ground, pay attention. The other alternative is Chinese school. But I am going to let them become the stereotype Chinese people.

I wish it didn't have to come to that. But as I said play the cards that you are dealt with. You cannot ask for the cards but can certainly play with them even though it is bad hand.

What about home schooling since u probably r FIRED by the time your children start schooling.

Sometimes I wonder... purely from financial pov... what if we could turn back time to when we were 17.
Suppose we had two options:
a) Study local all the way and receive RM1 million cash
b) Go overseas for studies

Which path would have put us further ahead financially by the time we hit 40?

That RM1 million, compounded at just 6% a year, becomes about RM4 million by age 40.
So for the overseas route to make sense purely from a financial angle, the extra earnings from that foreign degree must at least bridge that RM4 million gap.

Makes one wonder which "education" really paid better. the classroom one or the compounding one.
*
If i could do that i would choose A, d savings in 80s may be could buy 40 acres of land which is worth 10mil today.

Hence, I guess that is why more and more of us are asking: is overseas education really worth that million-ringgit price tag anymore, or just an expensive ego trip?
*
Not worth unless on scholarship n in top Uni.
My child went to local private primary n secondary, spent ~60k, then local U another 20k. The hundred of thousands saved could now be used as starting capital for fulltime investing if can't get a satisfying job.

that being said, once one retires early, will the investment strategy still be as aggressive? perhaps a bit more conservative?

Currently I am conservative. But hope to take out a portion to explore aggressive ones with my child.

I first started this thread exactly 4 years ago. I am 50 already. i spend most of my times  with my child and doing volunteering work.

I am actually quite happy my financials (this I have to thanks everyone here for contributing ideas and suggestions)  notworthy.gif

My financials  is  more than RM6 million now, I have no loan or mortgage. What I have been doing for the past 4 years is :
- minus amount of my FD, 30% of my portfolio
- only hold dividend paying and blue chips in KLSE (Maybank, Tenaga, RHB, IGBreit, PavReit)
- bought 3 SG banks and 3 reits in SGX
- bought gold (physical and etf), today is 10% of my portfolio

Again, Thank you everyone here wub.gif
*
Why FD n not ASMx & EPF? 2% diff of 2mil is a lot.

So within 4 years get additional 1M even though FIRE?  hmm.gif
*
Why not , esp TS invested in gold n SGbanks.
Once u reach >5mil, not difficult to add 1 mil every few years even on FIRE, esp if expense is only a couple of %.

as a malaysian i wont even consider Australia as my sister is there for almost 30 years
once ur kids go there (in this case i refer to my sister) they never wanted to come back
now 30 years plus she has her own family and made it in life she say this to me - study australia ok, have family here = no family
dont get me wrong she has a wealthy and loving husband, she has a good income job, she has kids in australia
now she is there 30+ years and her kids are all adult
her kids is a product of australian made, australian groom, pure australian manage
here comes the problem:
1. culture and tradition all gone
2. empty nester - kids move out when there are 18, some 19 and some 20 and very young age
3. loneliness (husband still alive)

money wont fix any of the above problem

me and her grow up in a big big big family, we stay in kampung house and inside 1 house got 4 generation

Nope. Send them there. Let them buy their own house. Can't help them there already.

It is already tough to buy house now without help. It is going to be even tougher for them in the future.

What are you confuse? My dividends is already 6 months worth of my pay. I am able to live the LEAN FIRE life because of my options. My options is like 2 my annual salary.
Good wife. What is there to live the mall alive 😅
It's OK to comment eh expensive leh. It shows that she won't simply spend the money.
*
Let say your monthly pay is 5k, annually 60k.
So your dividend is 6x5k=30k, options gains 120k. Total annual side income of 150k. Is that right? Good job.

Actually, if really risk adverse... Just throw everything into epf. 10m in epf and boh chap already. Especially if at a old age like 50 and above.

Turn off all social media and ignore the parliament noise. Everyday take out 1000rm and spend that...  Life is simple. smile.gif

Note: everyone else not lazy, there are safe ways to generate income with 10m.
*
Problem is we cant throw everything into epf n currently only 100k/year. Easier to throw into ASMx. Most of my liquid assets r in these two. Currently contended with the returns which is double my yearly expenses.
Very tempted to go into US options n stocks esp after I sell off my land.
