Do we need apply anything to the new spark plug threads? Thre's some kind of white powdery substance on my old plugs? Could be anti-seize substance.

anti-seize substance should be applied to the new spark plug threads. makes em easier to take out later on.

Added on September 11, 2007, 3:30 pmeither that or that 'powder' could be the corrosion from your plug leads. kena so many times before with the saga.

Added on September 11, 2007, 3:32 pmoh yeah, can we use WD-40 as anti-seize? been doing that all this while tongue.gif

Thanks man...I also used Double TT, a non silicon lubricant which is WD40 equivalent. My rough idling and misfiring probs were solved with the installation of the new spark plugs. I just applied a little bit only..

Will post the pics asap.

Added on September 11, 2007, 4:59 pmHere's my old spark plugs condition..

was having rough idling and occasionally misfiring..started to happen after heavy rain in Melaka and Batu Pahat last sinceFriday, Saturday..

Decided to change to new plugs - problem solved! No more rough idling..suspect it's water seeping from the weather seal at the edge of the bonnet, near the windscreen...it wasn't secured properly.

Some people said the white stuff is caused by water and rust of the lead (?)

WTF those are the oxidization of your plug leads. your plugs how old?

i just swapped my factory plugs yesterday for iridium ones and while they've done 25k kms, they look only 10% as bad as yours save for slight carbon deposits (running rich).

champion is great! seriously. too bad im into long lasting stuff now tongue.gif champion plugs have a habit of having great performance, and when they die, they just go without any warning signs (higher FC, jerkiness).

Yes the champions caused my car to jerk when idle...lucky nothing serious. Car is ok when changed to new plugs. Ignition system is the main issue with Savvy..

What was the main cause of the oxidation actually? Is it water seeping into the hole? I dun remember having this prob with my old car.

The plugs done more than 40 000 km, 2 years old already...factory plugs..yes, it's rated to last 40k km in the manual.

oxidization happens when you drive fast in the rain and water splashes up on your engine cover or happens simply because water seeped in while you were washing your engine with water. 40k kms rated plugs not bad, but i'd change them sooner about 30kms as i can see your plug tips are quite eroded sweat.gif and the rust! laugh.gif

20k km also quite normal if the plugs are not cheap..

How do you do sidegapping? what if the plugs have more than 1 ground flag, like 3 or 4 I dun think it gives much difference..

Champion plugs had bad design?!!

Spark Plug flashover

user posted image
Spark jumping from terminal nut to plug shell

http://www.sparkplugs.com/sparkplug411.asp...lashover&mfid=0

Flashover is when the voltage sent to the spark plug does not fire between the center and ground electrodes within the combustion chamber, instead, it shorts between the metal shell and the terminal nut on the plug exterior causing the engine to misfire. This can occur when the air is highly ionized (such as on a stormy day), or when the insulator is dirty. To reduce flashover the top portions of the insulator have 4 or 5 ribbed corrugations(depending on manufacturer).

Wiki:By lengthening the surface between the high voltage terminal and the grounded metal case of the spark plug, the physical shape of the ribs functions to improve the electrical insulation and prevent electrical energy from leaking along the insulator surface from the terminal to the metal case. The disrupted and longer path makes the electricity encounter more resistance along the surface of the spark plug even in the presence of dirt and moisture.

*Note: our stock Champion spark plugs' insulator only have smooth surface compare to other compatible Bosch, NGK and even Denso.

Note the threaded part is shorter than ours, means Savvy's D4F engine head is very thick which is a good thing.

erk. i change mine every 5k. didn't know spark plugs can last that long. what difference will it make if you use iridium spark plug as compared to normal spark plugs? using denso here

spark plug opener, can buy at sparepart shops or accessories shop. different engine might need different size.

i don't know about iridium but from my cousin using the denso iridium meant for endurance or something like that its the same with ngk platinum for me.

first and foremost it can last long. i usually change mine at 30k km or more. They perform consistently though out their life span. you'd be surprised how the plug actually wears out cos usually its the grounding part that wears not the center electrode so if you want you can actually try gapping the plug and i think its still good.

also i own a mini and used to use champion plugs on it. They suck big time compared even with standard ngks. i sometimes get hammering from other mini enthusiasts cos they insist that i should use the made in uk plugs but i don't care cos its much better.
