don't get inspiron 3000

you prefer 15 inch?
QUOTE(x-crusader @ Aug 5 2021, 09:38 PM)
just to check which i should go for, dont plan to buy now, so can wait for the good stuff

1. Budget : below 5k

2. Usage : heavy usage on browser like 10+ tab at a time, axure, photoshop, bluestack; occasional gaming (i can bear with mid-graphics but not lags)

3. Requirements (display size, battery life, weight etc) : slim and lightweight (gonna bring in and out of office, so, below 2kg), prefer to have numpad and good screen for colours, expandable ram and hdd if possible, battery life not really an issue
*
hard to find HDD+2kg, sacrifice either one

What's the max RAM I could upgrade for this model? 16GB? Does that mean 8GB onboard plus 8GB SODIMM?

Is it true that budget laptops at this price range have limited RAM upgrade capability?
*
max 32GB, if ady got 8GB soldered max is 24GB

not really, more like more and more laptops having soldered RAM

Hi all, need help with recommendations for a friend who is looking to buy a gaming laptop.

1. Budget: RM4k~5k
2. Usage: Gaming
3. Requirements (display size, battery life, weight etc): RTX3050 or 3060 preferred. Tested and proven brands or models.

I don't know much about laptops, but I guess it's important to have the ability to upgrade certain parts e.g. storage and ram?
*
wait time?

important things are GPU TGP and MUX, also for your reference: https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/4771329
QUOTE(wyk85 @ Aug 7 2021, 12:24 PM)
Looking for laptop recommendation for a 2-in-1 laptop with budget RM 4k - RM 4.5k.

Mainly used for reading, Netflix, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), web browsing, take notes.

Gaming is lowest priority (as long can play some low demand games with lowest setting, it is ok).

Prefer 1 week delivery time. Max 2 weeks, because need it urgently.
However, if there is a good deal, but the wait time is longer, do let me know.

Thank you.

fine with 8GB non upgradeable RAM?

QUOTE(toffy @ Aug 7 2021, 04:10 PM)
1) I read that my initial choice, the out-of-stock IP5 model, does not have a slot for RAM upgrade. Any reason for that? Does that mean I am stuck with the onboard/soldered RAM size?

2) Since more and more laptops are having soldered RAM, is this the direction going forward for premium or mid-range laptops also? Or do we need to pay a premium price, say RM5k or more, to get machines that use non-soldered RAM?

3) How do I check the max allowable RAM for soldered RAM laptops like this such cases?
*
1. The model design is like that, can't explain
2. It's just a small matter tbh, many ppl are fine with it also. It's not related to the price of the model.
3. Models with soldered RAM has fixed amount of RAM, so the max allowable RAM doesn't really matter since you can't upgrade it. Usually laptops with soldered RAM max out at 16GB
QUOTE(popchork @ Aug 7 2021, 04:57 PM)
prioritize best performance and cheapest price within budget,
prefer 15 inch but will take 14 inch if cheaper but same or better performance.
*
For your usage a decent CPU and SSD will do the job

can take a look at Thinkpad L15 G2 AMD
QUOTE(Enemy @ Aug 7 2021, 05:31 PM)
Any other laptops with RTX3060 you would recommend below RM5k? Or would you say RTX3050 wouldn't make much of a difference? (FYI I doubt she'll be playing games like Cyberpunk, etc).
*
no 3060 laptop under RM5k is decent for now, you have to make sacrifices like performance or display quality

3050 is not worth over RM4k, unless you can't afford 3060 there's no reason to buy
QUOTE(x-crusader @ Aug 7 2021, 07:37 PM)
i'll look into that. if gaming laptop?
*
something like Zephyrus G14, but it doesn't have numpad, only 1 upgradeable RAM

3. If I am getting a gaming or higher end laptop, I would prefer to have 32Gb RAM. So if the laptop comes with soldered 8GB RAM, then the max I could get is 24GB RAM. That's one concern.
You mentioned 16GB as the max here but you mentioned max 24GB for the Thinkpad E Series. So should i assume Thinkpad E Series is an exception, which allows me 24GB in total?
*
24GB is for 8GB soldered+1 upgradeable slot, not all soldered
if it comes with 16GB soldered+1 upgradeable slot, then max is 32GB

question is do you need 32GB RAM, even 16GB is plenty for non heavy usage - might as well spend the money on something else like SSD or better build quality
