'Transformers' HD DVD Smashes First-Week Sales Records

Paramount says first-week sales numbers for its HD DVD release of 'Transformers' top those of any other high-def disc released on either next gen format to date.

According to a just-issued press release from Paramount, the HD DVD edition of 'Transformers' sold over 100,000 units in its first day of release, and went on to sell an additional 90,000 units over next six days, making it the fastest and best-selling week one release on either high definition format, as well as the best selling HD DVD ever.

The standard-def version of 'Transformers' also made news, moving over 8.3 million units in its first week, and 4.5 million copies on day one, a new record for the year 2007.

The performance of the 'Transformers' DVD and HD DVD has demonstrated the phenomenal success of this global franchise," said Kelley Avery, president, Worldwide Home Entertainment, Paramount Pictures. "We're happy to be kicking off the fourth quarter with a title that clearly shows home entertainment releases are still an event that drives consumers into stores-which is a win for both content providers and retailers."

Paramount's HD DVD release of 'Transformers' last week came less than two months after the studio abruptly announced it would drop support of the Blu-ray format, and would release its next-gen titles on HD DVD exclusively. The studio reportedly received $150 million in exchange for its exclusivity.

Happy DVD people. paramount has officially announced that Transformers, this year's third highest gross movie will be out on 1 disk DVD and 2 Disk Special edition DVD and HD DVD for the price of $29.99 and $39.99 respectively. Paramount delivers media blitz for Transformers DVD, HD DVD

SEPT. 5 | After earning $306 million in theaters, Transformers will appear on DVD and HD DVD Oct. 16 backed by a media campaign that Paramount Home Entertainment says is one the biggest in the division's history.

The multi-million-dollar blitz will include TV, print, radio and online advertising. Plus, through a viral marketing program, fans will be able to customize a message for their friends from Optimus Prime sent via telephone or e-mail.

An array of high-impact displays will be deployed to retail locations across the country. Promotional partners including Chevrolet and Hostess also will extend the reach of the Transformers message to millions of people.

The standard-definition version will bow in single-disc and two-disc sets. The two-disc Special Edition provides an arsenal of bonus material, including commentary by director Michael Bay. Two multi-part in-depth documentaries, "Our World" and "Their War," explore the human elements of the film as well as the robot stars. They include producer Steven Spielberg discussing his early concept for the movie, extensive casting and training and real-world weapons provided by the military.

The HD DVD presentation includes Web-enabled features, such as an "Intelligence Mode" on-screen dashboard, which plays over the film and provides information about the robots and weapons, and a GPS locator. The HD DVD version also will include Transformers H.U.D. (Heads Up Display), which runs text commentary with the film and plays relevant behind-the-scenes footage in picture-in-picture.

The HD DVD version and two-disc standard-def special edition will both be priced at $39.99, with the standard-def single-disc at $19.95 MAP.

attention people . HD DVD disks will ONLY play in HD DVD players (not your regular hidef DVD player) or HD DVD computer drive enabled computer and on XBox 360 with the HD DVD add on drive.

these hardware must bear this HD DVD logo (below) to be able to play HD DVD disks). Players bearing this logo will also play regular standard dvds and upconvert them, making them look MUCH MORE nicer than playing them using a regular standard DVD player.

THis is a regular standard DVD logo and players bearing this logo ONLY will not play HD DVD disks:
