Here i some breaking SPEC numbers leaked and sourced from ZDNet:

ZDnet - "Here are the SPECfp_rate2006 peak numbers which are used for the niche HPC market. The leaked Barcelona 2.0 numbers are based on AMD's slide that claims a 35% advantage over Intel's 5345 as of 8/28/2007 (this is the date that these slides were generated). The numbers below show updated September numbers for Intel but it is possible that AMD has newer and better scores than the ones submitted on 8/20/2007"

Comments at ZDnet Blog -

"The 4-processor SPECint_rate2006 slides you posted are actually GOOD news for AMD !

They show the Opteron 8350 platform ($1004/proc) being faster, or as fast as, the Xeon L7345 and E7320 platforms (respectively $2301 and $1177/proc) ! Then, the Xeon X7340 score is indeed higher than the Opteron 8350, but this Xeon costs twice as much: $1980. (It would have been interesting to see the score for the intermediate Xeon X7330 by the way.)

Everybody is so focused on absolute performance, but, in the end, all what matters is how much bang you get for your buck. So unless you stricly buy the highest-end processors ($2000+ proc representing the top 20% of the 4P market), these slides prove that Barcelona is faster & cheaper for everything else (the remaining 80% of the 4P market) !
"

TS Comments - I wonder how AMD Opterons will perform clock to clock performance with Intel Xeons Tigerton.. Interesting developements indeed. I guess The war on the desktop market will become more interesting then this when Phenom comes out in November.. Hopefully the fight between Intel and AMD will always produce one winner..which is 'us' the consumer.

Oh my gosh.
Better than expected- I expected 5% less integer than C2D, 20% more FP than C2D. In quadcore it scales very nicely too!

Now they just need to ramp the speeds up quickly. Damnit DAAMIT!
(Well considering Penryn is Q1 2008, possible that they're back in the game- without much brute force)

And more comments on the ZDNet comments (laugh.gif), Intel as a platform is still more expensive. And overall, Xeons aren't as hard on Opterons than Core 2s are on the Athlons. Still, Barcelona is kinda crippletech (even by little) so the desktop part might get even more desirable results.
By the way, yeah, cache does matter a lot if you're looking for sheer numbers.

65nm for now, next year comes Shanghai with 45nm. It's not final yet but most certain.

And Barcelona has more than just normal Cool&Quiet- it can clock all 4 cores separately so you save power while your system is not demanding 4 cores. smile.gif

It needs new mobo though to take advantage of new power savings tech.

The laptop version should be the new Turion that may launch next yr with similar concept of centrino like technology. Barcelona is for server market and the next Budapest.

Nope, it doesn't. Split power planes (Seperate IMC and CPU clock) need AM2+
Core-based throttling doesn't. (That's why server people are loving the prospect)

Barcelona delay is because the native quad core design which Intel dare not attempt in year 2007. Intell will have native quad core design in late 2008. Til then AMD have the advantage for octa-core (8 cores) since they can just MCM (joining 2 quad-core together) to produce 8 cores CPU. I think AMD will learn from the mistake and move more quickly than they ever did.

That make sense as they can now just combine two native quad core and become Phenom X8... hmm.gif
