anyway its depends on final performance whether it can really beat that current c2d/c2q and next penryn family. AMD can just go back like its K6 generation where the performance falls behind Pentium II and the price were cheap.

AMD sure had done a market survey before they come out the price.
Base on the price, It is not difficult to predict the Baracelona's performance...

Hehe... barcelona..

They are pricing it high because people who buy a LOT of CPUs (Supercomputer institutes) are going to get it.

The ones who already have Socket F CPUs- No brainer. HPC performance is gila gila on the new chip.
The ones who have some 771 Intel Xeons might even consider adding some of these to their server.

It's not just about consumer grade products, as you get lesser margins on the consumer platform whole. Servers are ludricious business with a lot of commitment on the overall platform taken.

Some corporate server companies are also taking a lot more Opteron orders than 2003 when it beat Xeons- especially when now that Intel has to use FB-DIMMs that gobble so much power (and cash) that it's a bad tradeoff against registered DDR2, and Opterons of a higher TDP compared to a Xeon, can still have lower power consumption of the whole system in total.

If DAAMIT decides that the server market is better suited to them for now, so be it. Phenom's not going to perform like a slug, but they might not be looking for a direct fight with Intel (just as they avoided with nVidia, snatching OEMs (volume) and almost all workstation cards (super high margin) with great deals- while nV has shortages with AIBs (segmented the market too far))

Both companies can win-win. It's just a matter of perspective.

based on most reviews on barcelona, i thought it might price cheaper... tbh, i barely beat the recent c2 family let alone touching the penryn, but hopefully the future production of barcelona will gif intel a knock...

btw, ther's no tax on computer parts... except some computer accessories...

It is clear that on the recent Investor's Review, AMD had presented their future plans which is not a child's play waging the for the THRONE of microprocessor but more on rolling out product that meets the market demand and try to get away from direct competition with Intel.

Just like the old saying goes, if you can't win the game, change the rules laugh.gif

They've did it with Athlon Thunderbird, they've did it again with AMD64, they've did it with Integrated Memory Controller (not their novelty, but the mainstream market see it as a pioneer for mass consumer market)

Now, they just need to go all out with FUSION, PUMA and more creative revolutionary products... no one can fight the GIANT... laugh.gif

I don't see how anyone can conclude that they are not looking at a direct fight with intel. Even AMD wouldn't deny this fact. The fact is intel is going for ALL markets. AMD's upcoming chip is aimed at the mainstream desktop/server market, which is intel's primary market. It's not low power enough to be an embedded chip, and it doesn't have enough RAS features for big iron. So there's really nowhere else for it to go, even if it wanted to.

And on the graphics department, Q3 results will tell if they made any progress. But looking at the prices they are selling, i don't think they're making nice profits out of those either (same case with their current CPU business, regained market share but still losing money).
