It interchangeable and depending on IP address.

I just download in.startv.hotstar from US amazon AppStore, access with US VPN, it shows Tamil and Hindi contents (no disney). Access with  Malaysia IP will show local contents.

India IP is the best, they have HBO stuff.
*
Yeah, I agree it is true for in.startv.hotstar package version but I am not so sure with in.startv.hotstar.dplus.* versions. Anybody can check with their VPN access in different countries? I couldn't try this since I am waiting for the next credit cycle to activate the subscription.

nope. i dont use vpn.

earlier i tried to subscribe (my tablet and phones were wifi connected to local broadband). and keep getting error. my ip for sure is klang valley as i checked.

Then i switch to my phone line 4g (not using wifi) then was able to subscribe but still fail coz the visa takes long time to register or some nonsense.

Then i subscribed via the iphone app (still using phone line) and successful (they charge to my apple account which is tied to credit card).

THen i had problem activating on tv so i was streaming on my phone and using 4g line coz keep getting logging issues when i use my wifi.

Then saw the site activation (not the one my tv pointed to) so i followed it and activate on tv and voila it works and using my home broadband network which is for sure klang valley IP.

The app in my android tv dont know why keeps pointing to india registration site link tv.hotstar.com but using the malaysia activation link works as well.

So far activated on 2 tvs, my x90h sony and my Hisense a7400f. Currently both streaming live (one is French Open live tennis and the other game of thrones). Resolution is only FHD but ZERO artifacts and full nudity lol.

oh and it does not default in any other language but english so not sure why some of you getting malay etc.
*
My only clue from your luck is your subscription is now tied to your Apple ID account. The rest of us may likely use the credit card payment to subscribe. Need everybody to confirm this...

I dont think subscription play part tho.

I mean if you able to install and open d+hotstar india version, where the main menu got indian actors instead of malay actor
You can just connect to your account and able to access indian version. I think thats how he got access.

Again, im not sure yet. Need someone try.
*
About how he gets access to the Indian version without using any VPN service, I still suspect his subscription is tied to his Apple ID account.

"nope. i dont use vpn."

"earlier i tried to subscribe (my tablet and phones were wifi connected to local broadband). and keep getting error. my ip for sure is klang valley as i checked."

"Then i switch to my phone line 4g (not using wifi) then was able to subscribe but still fail coz the visa takes long time to register or some nonsense."

"Then i subscribed via the iphone app (still using phone line) and successful (they charge to my apple account which is tied to credit card)."

Noted since he said he installed Disney+Hotstar for Android TV app on his Sony X90H Android TV, I need to confirm how he installed it using the same Google account. There are two possible ways via online (not sideload installation using the USB media):
(1) Direct from Google Play Store app in the Android TV device
(2) Remotely install the Android TV app into your Android TV device from Google Play Store website https://play.google.com/store/apps

In the above options, it doesn't matter his Google account is set to which country region as long as he uses the same Google account on any Android mobile and Android TV device. Just need to know if using the remote website install approach, which app package id version he installed into his Android TV device. On the Sony Bravia Android TV version 9 and above, you can go to the Settings > Apps and open the app entry to check the package id shown below its app name.

The default version of Disney+Hotstar for Android mobile and Android TV (package id in.startv.hotstar) which gives the warning "This app is not available for any of your devices" if it is opened from any Malaysian IP address https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?....startv.hotstar

Here is the Malaysian region version (package id in.startv.hotstar.dplus.tv) for Android TV https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?...otstar.dplus.tv

Here is the Malaysian region version (package id in.startv.hotstar.dplus) for Android mobile https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?...v.hotstar.dplus

If you want to use the Android TV app version for your Android TV device, you still need to link it with your subscription by the following ways:
(1) via https://www.hotstar.com/activate (website approach once your subscription has been activated), or;
(2) from your app installed on which mobile device you have (iPhone/iPad/Android phone) to register a 4-character PIN code shown on the TV device and the app has an active subscription.

user posted image

Since he has a subscription already tied to his Apple ID account, it is simply a matter of registering the PIN code in the Disney+Hotstar app from any of his iPad/Phone devices to link any TV device. In his case, he did it for his Sony X90H and Hisense Smart Android TV device.

"So far activated on 2 tvs, my x90h sony and my Hisense a7400f."

About his statement below, it doesn't matter as you can see in my above X90H Android TV screenshot...

"The app in my android tv dont know why keeps pointing to india registration site link tv.hotstar.com but using the malaysia activation link works as well."

NOTE: If he opens the https://www.hotstar.com/activate link instead of https://www.hotstar.com/my/activate link as stated in the screenshot, it will still redirect to https://www.hotstar.com/my/subscribe/sign-i...ribe%2Factivate URL if it detects any Malaysian IP address (since he doesn't use any VPN).

If you haven't subscribed yet, the activation page will show this only:

user posted image

Also note that on the Sony Bravia Android TV settings, there is no region setting; just the datetime and location (for the ads personalization purpose) for the TV settings. In the Accounts settings, it is just to add and remove a Google account. No region setting is available to any Google account entry.

Another thing(s) to confirm:
(1) has he changed his region settings on his TV devices?
(2) has he installed Disney+Hotstar for his Astro package reason?
(3) has his Apple ID account set to any specific region?

terryfu, please confirm.

At least Prime has 4K HDR
*
Yup, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video got it right for 4K, HDR (Dolby Vision) and Dolby Atmos audio support. In addition, HBO GO seems to work fine.

But, the Disney+Hotstar app causes a smooth gradation (color banding) and other video quality issues on a 4K HDR Android TV when watching any trailer or its background video preview for its 4K stream offerings (I haven't subscribed so I can only watch the preview video and trailer only).

Interesting. No one subscribed via their Apple account? My apple account is definitely malaysian region and its linked to a Malaysian CC.

For the TVs, I have to load up google play and sign in with my google account. App was downloaded direct from Play store. The activate redirects me to Malaysian page and exactly i got ur screen shot that points to tv.hotstar.com

That has always been what appeared on my Disney + app on my TVs when I enter

Interestingly my account profile shows my Phone number but  country code (which is likely +91 for India country)

For reference my Youtube (before i sign in) will show Malaysian recommended videos.
*
Thank you. By the time you reply, I have added some extra info to my post already to emphasize extra info. Yeah, I suspect it is now tied to your Apple ID account.

The Disney+Hotstar app on your Apple devices is installed from the Apple Store for the Malaysian region, right?

If it is an Indian content, it should have a Sports channel entry from the side menu list. As terryfu have said, he is able to see a live sports streaming

"Currently both streaming live (one is French Open live tennis and the other game of thrones)."

Don’t use credit card.
I’ve used it yesterday and subscription still not activated yet. When check the acct is says PENDING.
I’ve mailed and bombed their Twitter they still have not activated it.
The system is so shitty I wonder what kinda company is running it.
I mean why there’s even a PENDING mode after paying for it?

When is your credit card's expiry date? Should at least more than 6 months to avoid any issue.

I used Apple ID to subscribe. It was around 10:30PM on 31st May when I opened the iOS app (which I had downloaded days prior) and saw the option to subscribe.

Was using WiFi (Maxis Fiber) at the time. I did not get any of the Indian content.
*
Now, that is so unlucky! See we are stumped as to why terryfu is able to access the Indian content without using any VPN on his Android TV...

Anyway, if you access through Android mobile, IPad or IPhone device only, then you will only see the Malaysian content.

I can guess buggy programming in the Android TV app version which allows access to the Indian content for those who link the Android TV device to the Disney+Hotstar subscription that is tied to an Apple ID account when there is no location info to check upon.

Since there is no Google account used in the Disney+Hotstar subscription in the app, there is no way to crosscheck the location info besides the location access in the Android TV. The app can use the DateTime locale setup but it seems like it is not used to know the region. It also ignores any check upon the Google account's region setting used for the Android TV setup.

Maybe terryfu needs to confirm whether he has enabled the location access setup in the Android TV setting or not (since there is no region setup in Android TV version 9 and above). Better for him not to enable the location access if he wants to enjoy this loophole! cool2.gif

He also needs to confirm which Package ID shown for the Disney+Hotstar app on his Android TV.

I follow this tered since day 1, it seem netflix is 100x better. Im gonna wait until they release other package. They underestimate malaysian cannot pay premium package like netflix isit?
*
In the IPTV thread, it looks like we are paying more for the "premium"

Indonesia - Rp 199,000 per year - approx RM56/year
India - Rs 1,499 year - approx RM89/year

Malaysia RM54.9/3 months = RM18.3/month - RM219/year

I wished they had similar subscription plan like netflix instead of trying to segregrate them into different market using different app

Just figured out why my media devices keep pointing to India's site. Turns out my ISP has this FreedomDNS service that automatically configures streaming channels to certain countries and in this case it points to Hotstar India even though my public IP is Shah Alam.

I thought i disconnect that service. IT works back end so i dont really feel it and only on certain streaming sites.

If Android TV for smart TVs or Android boxes, look for DRM compliance to avoid any issues which are important for watching DRM-protected content from any OTT streaming service.

What is your TV platform?

I notice the LG logo there...mind checking which webOS version of the TV? Even if it is listed on the LG App Store, maybe it is not meant for Malaysia but other countries.

It doesn't seem to be officially supported?

Maybe you need to check with Disney+Hotstar support on FB, Twitter, or e-mail to get this issue recognized and resolved officially.

Sony Android TV can get the app from Google Play Store for Android TV. Which version of the Disney+Hotstar app you get from the store will depend on whether you use a VPN service or not.

If your Sony TV is an Android TV, just go to the Play Store available on your TV and search for "VPN". You can install NordVPN or ExpressVPN app and make sure you have the account for the VPN service. I just mention NordVPN and ExpressVPN because they have not so many issues.

The catalog/library is controlled at server end based on region..
