SK Hynix to Build $106 Billion Fab Cluster: 800,000 Wafer Starts a Month

Capping off a busy week for fab-related news, South Korea authorities this week gave SK Hynix a green light to build a new, 120 trillion won ($106.35 billion) fab complex. The fab cluster will be primarily used to build DRAM for PCs, mobile devices, and servers, using process technologies that rely on extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV). The first fab in the complex will go online in 2025.

The new cluster will house four huge semiconductor fabrication plants, which will be located on a 4.15 million square-meter site, reports The Korea Herald. The four fabs will have a planned capacity of around 800,000 wafer starts per month (WSPM), which will make the site one of the world's biggest semiconductor production hubs.

Keeping in mind that we are dealing with EUV fabs, it is not surprising that a huge 200,000-WSPM plant with EUV tools will cost SK Hynix north of $25 billion. The fab cluster will be located near Yongin, South Korea, 50 kilometers south of Seoul, according to Yonhap news agency that cites the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

The new fabs will be used to make various types of DRAM using SK Hynix's upcoming production technologies that will use extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. And with a start date still years away, we're likely looking at a fab that will be used to manufacture DDR5, LPDDR5X, and other future types of DRAM.

SK Hynix reportedly plans to start construction of the first fab in the Yongin cluster in the fourth quarter of 2021. Given the expected size of the massive building and the amount of time needed to folly load it with production equipment, SK Hynix expects this first fab to be completed in 2025.

It is necessary to note that just several years ago SK Hynix and Samsung used to build fabs that could produce both DRAM and NAND flash memory – or at least be converted with a minimal amount of effort.

This is not the case today as DRAM production now heavily relies on lithography equipment, whereas 3D NAND production uses loads of etching tools, which is why the fabs for different types of memory have to be equipped completely differently.

The fab cluster in Yongin will be SK Hynix's second major DRAM site in South Korea after the company's primary DRAM hub near Icheon that houses its M10, M14, and M16 fabs.

The M16 fab was completed in February and will be used for DRAM production using SK Hynix's EUV-based 1a process technology starting the second half of 2021.

Business Areas

DRAM
Aiming to lead the global DRAM industry by providing high-quality DRAM products for diverse needs and markets, including mobile and server, through innovative technology development.

NAND
Manufacturing the latest NAND flash such as TLC and QLC, while continuously developing products with higher data processing speed and a wide range of capacities from 128Gb~1Tb.

SSD
Also providing the best NAND Flash solutions to meet the diverse needs of the customers, particularly with revolutionary high-quality SSDs for enterprise, clients, and consumers.

CIS
Planning to lead a new chapter in CIS market through high-resolution CMOS sensors serving as a electronic eyes.

RAM manufacturing is an oligopoly, there's only 3 manufacturers and whatever the production is prices will be high.

Why? Cause they fix prices, and have been caught doing thing twice now, but they've most certainly been at it for a lot longer and more times.

so for the couple of people in here saying this should make DRAM prices cheaper ... think again.

Because fab business require involved very colossal amount of money. Not many can enter or compete with existing giants. The real monopoly is ASML. The only supplier with eUV litography machine. Can produce limited amount of machine yearly while charging what ever the fuvk amount they wish

10 years ago Korean is behind Malaysia, what makes you think that 10 year in future they will come to Malaysia?

Because we got Azmin. When he said Malaysia only are selective of investment. It is actually reverse psychology to entice other to come in.
Azmin always think with his rear.

Micron and Elpida Announce Closing of Sponsor Agreement Transactions

Micron Increases Global Scale and Enhances DRAM Portfolio

Micron Also Acquires Rexchip Shares From Powerchip

BOISE, Idaho and TOKYO, July 31, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Micron Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:MU) ("Micron") and Elpida Memory, Inc. ("Elpida") trustees announced today the closing of Micron's acquisition of 100 percent of Elpida's equity, pursuant to a Sponsor Agreement entered into on July 2, 2012 in connection with Elpida's corporate reorganization proceedings conducted under the jurisdiction of the Tokyo District Court.

In a related transaction, Micron also announced today the completion of its acquisition of a 24 percent share of Rexchip Electronics Corporation from Powerchip Technology Corporation and certain of its affiliates. The transactions will be recorded for accounting purposes as being effective at 11:59 p.m., Tokyo time, on July 31, 2013.

Elpida's assets include a 300 millimeter (mm) DRAM fabrication facility located in Hiroshima, Japan; an approximate 65 percent ownership interest in

力积电

Rexchip, whose assets include a 300mm DRAM fabrication facility located in Taiwan;

and a 100 percent ownership interest in Akita Elpida Memory, Inc., whose assets include an assembly and test facility located in Akita, Japan.

Together with the Rexchip shares acquired from Powerchip, Micron will control approximately 89 percent of Rexchip's outstanding shares and 100 percent of Rexchip product supply. The manufacturing assets of Elpida and Rexchip together can produce more than 185,000 300mm wafers per month, which represents an approximate 45 percent increase in Micron's current manufacturing capacity.
