Guys, please teach me how to plant carpet grass from seeds in my new garden.

I'm not keen on ordering from landscapers because I have a big dog that's not trained to live in a house with a garden yet. She likes to dig and I don't want to spend thousands of dollars on carpet grass just to have her dig holes everywhere and destroy the garden before I can properly train her.

I see online there's a lot of people selling Bermuda grass. How is this different from Japan/Taiwan/Philippine grass that landscapers are offering?

From my basic understanding, the steps are:
1) Spray weedkiller to kill all the weeds in the garden and wait 2 weeks for them to all die off.
2) Pour sand to flatten the garden.
3) Pour fertiliser (what type?)
4) Sprinkle the seeds and wait.

Am I doing this right? Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks!

1. What size is your lawn ?
2. Not all the seeds are 100% carpet grass.
3. You cant train your dog NOT to dig.
4. No matter how much care one put in his lawn, weeds will bound to grow.
5. Maintaining a nice garden is tough job ... weeding, trimming, sunshine, water, drainage and not too much shade.

Basically prep the surface relatively flat and adjust slope for drainage.. assuming that it is the yellow/red mud that is rather devoid of nutrients.. no worries.
Lay out a newspaper covering the whole area. (per https://www.getgreenbewell.com/newspaper-pr...-in-the-garden/ )
Pour fresh topsoil/(50-50 weed-free potting mix + sand) over the newspaper.
Sprinkle real bermuda grass seeds all over (e.g. https://www.lazada.com.my/products/enghong-...3524642601.html )
Water the garden
Ta-dah~

P.S. All these fancy grass will need regular watering. You can experiment with sprinkler systems if too lazy to water manually.
Cow grass is the real 0 maintenance one. laugh.gif

Hi thanks for the reply.

1. About 1500 sf
2. You mean those grass seeds sold online may contain other types of grass?
3. Yeah... just hoping she won't dig too much.
4&5. Right. Will need to tend to that often.

I think you can only buy bermuda seed in this region.

The dog will dig whether u plant from seed or lay sod. It is easier to lay sod as it take 2-6 months for the seed to reach compact state. During this period you need water a lot and removing weed.

Cost wise also about same if you buy soil and self plant from seed due to the time spend on it.

You can get sod cheaply in s buloh. Go as inside as possible and buy sod from sod planter instead nursery shop along the road. Japan lawn sod is about rm1.80 per pcs.

My garden of almost 3000sf took about 6 months to fully covered as I only patched half the area.

We had a beagle much later and it really create havoc in the garden. Not only that, our photo beam alarm triggered quite often. After 2 years, we gave up for adoption.

I spend almost every morning tending to my garden esp weeding and tending to my other plants.

Wow that's so much cheaper than buying from nurseries. Would you happen to have their contact? I'm in Seremban actually so I can't get to S. Buloh in the foreseeable future.

I know I can forget about keeping a beautiful lawn with a dog. My expectations aren't really that high actually. As long as it can stay mostly carpet grass is good enough for me.

With your dog, cow grass will be better option. Even if you dont weed often, the different between cow grass and smaller weeds are not obvious. Secondly, if your dog messed up, returfing is easier.

You can keep dog and have nice lawn. You just need to train your dog.

I have a free-roaming schnauzer at home too.

I would suggest you install a sprinkling system. I self install and it cost about RM250 for the entire system. 2x auto timer, 7 head, and hdpe pipe. Even though the lawn is 7ftx80ft, it still the same for 1k sqft because I am using 180° and 90° sprinkler head for directional spray. You can buy 360° head.

Watering makes a lot different. Get roller mower instead string trimmer to cut.

My friend want to buy too recently but the person’s phone is not working anymore. The fella is part of a group of indo workers that formerly work in nursery shop. You can just walk in to those grass planter and make offer.

There is no season in malaysia but the availability is depend on the plant cycle.

The japan and philippine grass is part of zoysia grass if you want to google and read more about it. Generally in msia, you can get 3 type of grass and their hybrid; cow grass, bermuda and zoysia.

Your basic steps are on the right track! However, when it comes to fertilizer, consider a balanced lawn fertilizer with a ratio like 10-10-10 or 15-15-15. This will provide the necessary nutrients for healthy grass growth.
