I was wondering why was the language name changed from Bahasa Malaysia to Bahasa Melayu? Some of you guys who took SPM in the '90s and early 2000s sat for the Bahasa Malaysia paper. What was the reason for the name change?

I dunno what the official stance is, but I've always used both names for the language interchangeably. It's the language of the Malay people, and it's the national language of our country.

Bahasa Melayu ----> Bahasa (Melayu) Malaysia ----> Bahasa (Melayu) Indonesia ----> Bahasa (Melayu) Brunei Bahasa Melayu is the mother set. Regional variants are subset. last time my cikgu explained, got 2 competing schools of thought
1 is emphasis melayu because race
1 is emphasis malaysia because national language
depends what is going on in the political brains at the top... how best to racing leh? show off the name? or show off the 1st-class status?

Bahasa jiwa bangsa, they said.
Bangsa Malaysia doesn't exist, so Bahasa Malaysia doesn't exist.
I think..
And also political sentiment on racial superiority plays a role too.

Both are correct since Bahasa Melayu is the national language of Malaysia, which makes it also Bahasa Malaysia. Similar to how Mandarin is often called Chinese because it is the primary dialect of China. Or how American English is sometimes just referred to as American.
