Guys, what's your next project? I think I'm going to start to DIY and modding stuff after Raya. Maybe we can do it together. I'm planning to start with an external PSU. then the DAC, the Amp, etc.

Gonna need a new soldering iron and stuff though.. All my irons are rusty.. long time no use.. heheh... biggrin.gif

You definitely need a new set of stuffs. What level of electronic hobbyist/kit builder are you?Anyway, welcome to the club!  rclxms.gif

What level I am? I'm still struggling to differentiate a capacitor and a resistor. icon_question.gif laugh.gif tongue.gif

Which Toroidal Transformer should I get?
1. Multicomp for RM68.00 or
2. Nuvotem for RM96.00 ?

Both are 30VA, 2 x 12V

hmm... hmm.gif

You should go for at least 80 to 120VA transformer.. trust me!..it costs only a fraction more..
Moreover, you can parallel the two 12V windings to obtain maximum current delivery.
BTW, you'd have to know the precaution when mounting a toroidal tranny..its not like as simply mounting the ordinary E-core transformer with 2 bolts.
Essentially, the toroidal must NOT have contact with the base of chassis (there's a rubber insulator at bottom and the center bolt (not tightened too hard either) should NOT be too near or have contact with the top or cover of chassis.
*
120VA? That's too much! shocking.gif I only need them to feed my X-DAC. For the Lab, I already have this:

Anyway, thanks for the installation tips nod.gif

yeah im a noob. but at soldering oni. hahaha.. now not a soldering noob anymore.

Bro, it took me months to master the art of soldering. You not need only to know how to solder eletronic components onto PCB, but how to solder 2 pcs of wires together, two pcs of different wires, wire to connector (1001 types of connectors), etc. Also, need to know the types of solders, soldering irons, etc. tongue.gif

Me have been using a 80VA model for years, now its powering 2 out of 3 MF X-series component. I've observed the 80VA quite effortless and hardly any heat. BTW..your X-DAC should be fed with AC voltage input..not DC I presume,.
*
Hmm... 80VA huh? sweat.gif I though 30VA is more that enough as the current rating for my X-DAC is only 500mA. 30VA will give out max 1.25A. Yes, it's a 12VAC input. So output from the tranny will go directly to X-DAC power jack.

Just a 'survey' here.
How many newbies here interested to build a portable headphone amp that cost around RM20?Maybe less. It'll be a value for money/highest bang for buck device.. tongue.gif
Just to help spread the hobby..

So how many newbies have enrolled in your class? Seriously this is an opportunity not to be missed!

It was never intended as a formal class.Formal class must pay formal fees biggrin.gif
It is just a sit down at the 'mamak' for a TT session and talk about the DIY progress and related electronics stuffs..Thats about it.. done purely for the fun of the hobby.

So when is the next class? smile.gif

FYI..theres no MAMAK stall where i am, hehe!

True. There's no mamak stall in Sarawak.. only starbucks, SFC and coffee beans. Such a high class city tongue.gif

Fresh item required here.. biggrin.gif

About 15 years ago, I built this 'stereo FM transmitter' so  that I can play my Discman in the car..
The KIT was bought in Australia ("DIICK SMITH") and costs AUD40. Definitely sounded better than the normal current FM transmitter for the iPod/DAP.
Never had a case for it .. tongue.gif Just found it while cleaning up the house for Raya.. should be still working, will test later.

Edit: Had to spell "DIICK" coz when spelled with single "I" only asterisks shown.. sensorship huh? tongue.gif

Here is the pix..

Nice one Jazzy!
BTW, I'll start my DIY PSU project next week. Right now finalising the materials nod.gif

I've got 2 Instek GW series (discontinued) power supplies. After 5 years, they're still running strong.

I'm looking for a portable USB multimeter which can display and log realtime parameters such as voltage and current. Any suggestions? Is it possible to DIY one?

Try Agilent U1252A DMM.

Audio Alchemy DITB! WOW!! Never thought that I ever going to see one again. Nice one nod.gif

Guess what, I'm upgrading my DAC too. But the first thing that I did was I replaced the Opamps, since they're the easiest to do.

Now I'm waiting for my Toroidal transformer along with other components to arrive, for the external PSU.

Next would be to replace all the capacitors (and maybe some resistors and diodes while I'm at it). I intend to go crazy on this one biggrin.gif

The clock module needs to be upgraded but I'm not so sure how am I going to go about it. Might probably go for the Burson low jitter clock.. unsure.gif I don't know...

Let's see who can finish it first hahaha... biggrin.gif

March, it's an X DAC

bsl555, IF there is enough space, how would you go about improving the clocking?

Now what I need is some kind of enclosure, IEC power inlet, power cable, and time to actually fix 'em up. rclxms.gif That settles the power part. sweat.gif

X-DAC have 18bit BurrBrown DAC and HDCD digital filter. Except for the HDCD feature, it's a budget DAC that's no better than the good old Marantz CD63Mk2 (stock and Un-modded).

Install a low jitter clocking module lah..it improves most stock DAC by miles. Commercial ones from LC Audio or Trichord will cost more than the current value of a used DAC. There's DIY ones featured in some diy forums..at a fraction of the price but involves your own hard labor to build one up from scratch and knowing the circuitry to fit one in...sometimes easy, sometimes mind boggling...which I nearly bungled one up inside my own CDP due to component values which had to be altered.
*

I guess getting a clocking module is the best bet. Cost is not really a concern as I intent to keep this DAC for a long long time.

great looking toroidals.. for your DAC? How much does each cost?

yeah, for my DAC. I paid RM96+ for it.
