QUOTE(Quang1819 @ Apr 9 2021, 10:29 AM) Ace hardware is more for mid mid - mid high income segment. Ace hardware sells all branded high end expensive stuffTheir products are good, that's why it's at a premium price compare to MR. DIY. Even the places they operate are all in proper malls. But Malaysians are mostly low to mid low income earners. That's why they got majority of the market share. Mr diy have got their sales strategy spot on. They know Malaysians are not like Americans where they have their own garage and like doing their own diy stuff. Americans will buy branded good quality stuff. Malaysians on the other hand use one item a few times then chuck it away never to be seen again. Thats why they prefer to buy cheap tools . Use a few times only. And thats how mr diy keep getting repeat sales. Ppl will buy the same tool many times since its so cheap. Quality migt not be the best but it gets the job done This post has been edited by kevin23: Apr 9 2021, 10:41 AM |

QUOTE(arsenwagon @ Apr 9 2021, 10:08 AM) R u physics grad from UM also just looked him up, he graduated from economics. In any case, this shows two important things:Btw there's another UM grad founder of rotiboy... If he studied physics maybe it helps to control the heat for the perfect roti 1. The common myth that successful businessman are "dropouts" is a false one. These are all highly intelligent people who got university education. Dunno why still got people believe bodo ppl can do business 2. Successful businessman are often those put in positions where they have nothing else to lose and hence willing to take risks. These people usually don't have degrees from "engineering, medicine, etc.". Hard to find employment may be a blessing in disguise and spur them to create a successful billion dollar business lijor the great and skyuo23 liked this post

Really many congratulations to them. They took a concept born in the early nougties which is to source cheaply from mainland China & turned it into a big thing. Many others who did so back then also succeeded but these guys took it to another level.

QUOTE(9m2w @ Apr 9 2021, 10:26 AM) Actually the business model of HW shops buying cheap stuff and selling them still relatively cheap but with a healthy markup has been around for some time. Back in my old neighbourhood there was a hardware shop that made decent money. Its still standing. Once in a while the owner will brag his nett profit to neighbouring shops which was more than decent at that time (30 years back). Guy lived in a bungalow in PJ. Kids was sent overseas. He never went more than one shop, still keeping the same place at the same size. Is exactly those kind of mom and pop shop that are coming under pressure from guys like mrdiy. The days of mon n pop shop are coming to an end with the capital backing massively scaled retail operations like mrdiy. A similar thing happened decades ago in usa with walmart. This is a biz that once you have a reliable supplier and a steady market you can prosper. |

QUOTE(Freshmeat21 @ Apr 9 2021, 01:10 AM) Ace hardware harga yahudi, i bought quite a lot of things from them during mco then only to find mr diy beside sold things a lot cheaper. Not everything in Ace Hardware is sold at harga yahudi. Most of their US imported cleaning products are sold at reasonable price when shopee/lazada sellers are selling them at harga yahudi. Almost half the price of harga yahudi in shopee/lazada. |
